About Terry Park
History and Namesake
Established in 1945, Terry Park bears the name of Dr. Robert James Terry, a notable figure who not only contributed significantly to medical literature but also helped establish what would eventually become the St. Louis Audubon Society. Pretty cool historical roots for a neighborhood park!
Location and Accessibility
Spanning 4 acres in St. Louis's Gate District, this city park sits neatly bordered by Eads Avenue (north), Louisiana Avenue (east), Henrietta Street (south), and S. Compton Avenue (west).
Its central spot means you're never far from major highways or nearby medical centers - convenient if you're a local looking for a quick escape into nature. Just a heads-up though: parking can be a bit tight when everyone decides to visit at once.
ADThe Haunted Lemp Brewery Bottle Works Tour
After the collapse of the Lemp Brewing Empire, the Lemp Brewery lived on and became the largest shoe manufacturing plant in the world. Sold at auction to the International Shoe Company for 1/20th its value, the brewery remained a major industrial complex until it was forced to shut down due to the construction of Interstate 55.
Natural Features
Terry Park blends recreational spaces with natural elements rather nicely. Mature trees cast welcome shadows over the playgrounds, while newer bald cypress trees line S. Compton Avenue.
These younger trees should really transform the park's look as they grow over the next ten years or so. While you'll come across plenty of shady spots to relax, parts of the park are definitely sun-drenched - so bring water, especially if you're planning to shoot some hoops on those basketball courts.
Recreational Facilities
The playground got an upgrade in recent years. It's not the fanciest you'll ever see, but it offers enough modern equipment to keep the kids entertained.
Basketball enthusiasts can enjoy the basketball court, although be aware the maintenance isn't always perfect - you might encounter a bent hoop now and then.
Picnic and Relaxation Areas
If you're planning an outdoor meal, Terry Park has several picnic areas throughout the grounds. You might want to pack a blanket if you prefer lounging on the grass.
You can find plenty of seating scattered around, making it easy to relax or catch up with friends. Multiple shelters are also available if you're planning a gathering or just need some shade or rain protection.
Community Value
Terry Park's layout works well for the community. With amenities for different age groups, it's a common spot for families and individuals looking to spend time outdoors in the city.
Locals sometimes refer to it as a "Southside landmark". The park has maintained its family-friendly atmosphere for generations, with grounds that accommodate various activities.
