Historic Origins
Established in 1868 as a gift from philanthropist Henry Shaw to the city, Tower Grove Park was officially opened to the public in 1872. The park is recognized as one of the finest examples of a late 19th-century Gardenesque style urban park in the United States and is designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Landscape and Design
This historic 289-acre public park features a unique landscape design with winding paths, symmetrical features, and intense plantings. Tower Grove Park is home to over 7,000 trees, including many rare and exotic species, making it a Level II Arboretum.
The park's layout includes numerous Victorian-era pavilions, each with its own distinct architectural style, scattered throughout the grounds. Several water features, including lily ponds and fountains, add to its aesthetic appeal and provide habitats for various species.
