About the Location
History and Location
Willmore Park, the last major green space developed by St. Louis, came to life in 1947 when Cyrus Crane Willmore, a prominent local developer, donated 70 acres to the city. Today, this 105.61-acre park is located in southwestern St. Louis, between Hampton Avenue to the south, residential neighborhoods to the north, Jamieson Avenue to the east, and the River des Peres to the west.
Water Features
At the heart of the park lie two fishing lakes - one spanning 5 acres and a smaller 3-acre pond - that have become go-to spots for local fishing enthusiasts. If you're lucky, you might reel in a decent-sized catfish while enjoying the company of ducks, turtles, and the occasional elegant egret that call these waters home.
A charming little bridge arches over one of the ponds, offering an ideal vantage point to pause and take in the serene water views. It's a peaceful spot to stand on a calm morning, watching the water ripple beneath you.
Recreational Facilities
The park features Gus' Playground, an inclusive play area created in partnership with Unlimited Play, a non-profit dedicated to barrier-free playgrounds. Here, children of all abilities can play together on equipment that includes everything from musical drums and xylophones to climbing walls, roller slides, and swings for kids of various ages. The playground is thoughtfully designed to make play accessible for everyone.
On scorching summer days, the nearby splash pad becomes a haven for kids looking to cool off while having fun.
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed with the variety of facilities available. The park houses soccer fields, softball fields (some with lights for evening games), tennis courts, increasingly popular pickleball courts, and a roller hockey rink.
Disc golf fans can test their skills on the 18-hole course that meanders through much of the park. With a good mix of challenging holes and well-maintained grounds, it's suitable for players ranging from beginners to seasoned pros.
Trails and Natural Spaces
If you're looking to stretch your legs or clear your mind, the 1.5-mile paved trail loops around the lakes, offering a smooth path for walking, jogging, or simply ambling along. The trail is wheelchair accessible and fantastic for walking your four-legged friends.
The landscape shifts between open sunny meadows and cool wooded sections, creating diverse environments throughout the seasons. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot hawks soaring overhead, terns skimming the water, or even shy groundhogs going about their business.
Amenities
Dog owners appreciate the dedicated dog park where their pets can socialize and play off-leash. Though it requires membership, the park provides a secure environment with separate areas for small and large dogs.
Scattered across the grounds are several picnic shelters with tables, many conveniently positioned near the playground or under the shade of mature trees. The barbecue grills available at these spots make it easy to turn a simple outing into a proper family gathering or weekend cookout.
Restroom facilities are available around the park, however you should note they may close during winter months.
Parking is plentiful, with several lots throughout the grounds and street parking options near specific amenities.
With its blend of natural beauty and thoughtful facilities, Willmore Park has become a cherished retreat for St. Louisans seeking a place to relax, exercise, or simply enjoy being outdoors throughout the changing seasons.
