About the Location
History and Location
Established in 1947, Willmore Park was the last major park developed by the city of St. Louis. The park was created when prominent St. Louis developer Cyrus Crane Willmore donated 70 acres of land to the city.
This substantial 105.61-acre green space is located in the southwestern part of St. Louis, Missouri. Situated near the intersection of Gravois and Hampton Avenue, Willmore Park is bounded by Hampton Avenue to the south, a residential area to the north, Jamieson Avenue to the east, and the River des Peres to the west.
Water Features
The park's layout includes two fishing lakes - one 5 acres in size and another 3 acres - which are popular spots for local anglers.
Recreational Facilities
A notable feature is the playground, which was designed with accessibility in mind, allowing children of all abilities to play together. This inclusive playground, known as Gus' Playground, was developed in collaboration with Unlimited Play, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating barrier-free playgrounds.
For sports enthusiasts, Willmore Park provides multiple options. It includes soccer fields, softball fields (some of which are lighted), tennis courts, and a roller hockey rink.
The park also features a disc golf course that utilizes much of the park's acreage, offering an engaging activity for disc golf players.
Trails and Natural Spaces
Nature lovers can enjoy the park's green spaces, mature trees, and a 1.5-mile paved trail that winds around the lakes, providing opportunities for walking, jogging, or casual strolls.
The park's landscape includes both open areas and wooded sections, creating a diverse environment for visitors.
Amenities
Willmore Park also caters to pet owners with a dedicated dog park and pet-friendly walking paths.
For community gatherings and leisure, the park offers several picnic shelters scattered throughout its grounds.
With its mix of natural beauty and recreational facilities, Willmore Park serves as a significant green space for the St. Louis community, providing a place for relaxation, exercise, and outdoor enjoyment.
