About the Location

History

Located in the Ellendale neighborhood of St. Louis sits Francis R. Slay Park, a 9-acre green haven established back in 1926. Originally known as Ellendale Park, it got its current name in 2009 as a tribute to Francis R. Slay - a former Democratic politician and restaurateur who also happens to be the father of former St. Louis mayor Francis G. Slay.

Location

The park finds itself nestled between the River Des Peres to the east, McCausland Avenue to the west, Arsenal Street to the north, and Canterbury Avenue to the south. Its position on a relatively quiet, dead-end street creates a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere despite being in the heart of the city. You'll find a nice blend of open green spaces and recreational areas to explore, and many appreciate how easy it is to get to.

Recreational Facilities

For sports enthusiasts, Francis R. Slay Park offers soccer fields and softball fields that host both organized leagues and casual players. For those who prefer a more laid-back form of exercise, the two-lane walking path forms an ideal loop for uninterrupted strolls or jogging sessions.

Families with kids will appreciate the playground featuring two slides and a unique fish-shaped climber that the little ones seem to love. There are three benches surrounding the play area where you can sit and keep an eye on the children. Tennis enthusiasts can access the tennis courts at any time - they're always open to the public.

Landscape

The northern section of the park near Arsenal Street offers mowed grass areas dotted with trees, including some newer plantings that will eventually provide more shade. While the park itself is lovely, it's worth noting that getting here on foot from the larger Ellendale neighborhood to the west can be a bit tricky - you'll need to cross six lanes of traffic and a median.

The quiet, peaceful atmosphere makes this spot excellent for walking dogs, enjoying a lunch break outdoors, or simply sitting with a good book. Fair warning though: the grass maintenance can be hit-or-miss, with some areas occasionally growing a bit wild between mowings.

Amenities

The basics are covered with restrooms and a water fountain, however these facilities aren't always in top condition. The restrooms, in particular, are often either locked or could use some attention when they are open.

One standout feature is that Francis R. Slay Park is the starting point for the Missouri Greenway bike trail, making it a favorite spot for cyclists setting out on longer adventures. Despite some maintenance challenges, this park remains a valuable green space for the St. Louis community - a place where you can play sports, enjoy nature, or simply catch your breath in the midst of urban life.
