Berra Park

Heritage and History

Berra Park is a 4.8-acre city park located in the Hill neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1945, the park is bounded by Shaw, Lily, Daggett, and Macklind Avenues, just south of Interstate 44.

Originally named Virgo Park when purchased by the city, it was renamed in November 1965 to honor Louis G. "Midge" Berra, a long-time political figure in the area. It's worth noting that Midge Berra was not related to the famous baseball player Yogi Berra, who also grew up in the Hill neighborhood.

Neighborhood Character

The park reflects the strong Italian-American heritage of the surrounding Hill neighborhood, known for its neat homes, businesses, and Mediterranean restaurants. Two delis or restaurants are visible from the park, adding to its neighborhood charm.

Facilities and Amenities

Berra Park features well-maintained facilities, including baseball fields described as being in excellent condition. The park also includes newer playground equipment, with areas for both older and younger children.

A pavilion in good condition provides space for gatherings, with movable picnic tables available for community use.

Community Involvement

Community involvement is evident in the park's upkeep. The Hill Business Association has donated trash cans, and there are signs of ongoing improvements such as new stone pavers for structured plantings and an irrigation system to maintain the landscaping.

Unique benches have been installed in several locations throughout the park.

Community Use

The park serves as a community gathering place, used for parties and recreational activities. Its cleanliness and well-maintained state reflect the pride and involvement of the surrounding neighborhood in preserving this local green space.
