About Coulson Park

Riverside Retreat

Nestled along the banks of the Yellowstone River in Billings, Montana, Coulson Park spans 13 acres of public land where nature and recreation come together. It's a little slice of wilderness that's somehow managed to remain within city limits - ideal for when you need a quick escape without the long drive.

The park sits on what was once Coulson, one of Billings' original settlements. There's something pretty special about walking the same ground as the city's earliest residents while enjoying modern-day amenities.

Trails and Activities

A paved cement trail meanders alongside the river, offering a smooth surface for morning jogs, leisurely strolls, or bike rides with a view. The path brings you close enough to the riverbank that you can easily wander down to dip your toes in the water when the mood strikes.

If you're into water activities, you'll appreciate the boat ramp that provides direct access to the Yellowstone River. Local anglers frequent these waters, and for good reason - the fishing here can be quite rewarding. No matter if you're launching a kayak or casting a line, the river access is one of the park's standout features.

Natural Environment

Unlike more manicured city parks, Coulson embraces its wild side. Much of the native vegetation remains untouched, creating a genuine riverside habitat. The landscape is wonderfully varied - rocky outcroppings give way to sandy shores and grassy patches, each offering its own kind of experience.

From the park, you can take in views of impressive cliff formations rising from the opposite riverbank. During warmer months, the riverside becomes a natural playground where you can hunt for interesting rocks, wade in the shallows, or simply sit quietly and watch the timeless flow of the Yellowstone.

Amenities and Facilities

Coulson Park leans toward the rustic side of the spectrum. You won't find permanent picnic tables or playground equipment here, so it's best to bring your own chairs if you're planning to stay awhile. The open spaces provide plenty of room to spread out a blanket or set up your own portable table.

Note that there are currently no restroom facilities available, so you'll want to plan ahead before spending extended time at the park.

Future Horizons

Exciting changes are in the works for Coulson Park, with development happening in phases based on a master plan that got the green light in 2020. The vision includes historical markers to honor the area's past, a dedicated bike park, artistic sculpture installations, an off-leash area for four-legged friends, and even a covered arbor where small performances can take place.

The city's goal strikes a thoughtful balance - enhancing what the park offers while preserving its natural character. Just be aware that some areas might occasionally be roped off due to ongoing improvement projects. The minor inconvenience today promises an even better riverside experience tomorrow.
