Four Dances Recreation Area

Location and Geography

Perched just 2 miles east of downtown Billings, Montana, Four Dances Recreation Area sprawls across 765 acres of public land. This area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and is designated as both a Special Recreation Management Area and an Area of Critical Environmental Concern.

The recreation area sits atop a plateau with Coburn Road marking its eastern boundary. To the west, the majestic Yellowstone River creates a natural border, where dramatic cliffs plunge 200 to 500 feet down to the water below. These elevated spots provide excellent views of both the river and the Billings cityscape.

Natural Environment

Wander through Four Dances and you can find yourself immersed in native sagebrush and grassland ecosystems. Near the river cliffs, ponderosa pines stake their claim among rocky outcrops, while a serene cottonwood riparian zone hugs the Yellowstone River's edge.

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife during your visit, including the occasional snake that might be sunning itself along the trails. And maybe bring a windbreaker - the area's elevation and exposure can make for some pretty breezy conditions, especially at those stunning overlook points.

Historical Significance

Four Dances Recreation Area came to be through a collaborative effort between landowners, the Yellowstone River Parks Association, and the BLM, all working together to preserve this undeveloped open space near Billings.

The name honors Chief Four Dances, a significant religious and military leader in Crow Nation history. Back in the 1830s, this very spot served as a fasting location for Four Dances - a place of spiritual significance that still resonates today.

History buffs will appreciate the Will James cabin, an interesting historical feature you can explore while hiking through the area.

Trail Information

The trails at Four Dances are well-maintained and accommodate most fitness levels. An especially great feature is how clean the trails are kept, with a notable absence of litter throughout the recreation area.

The main trail to the scenic overlook is relatively short and easy, making it ideal for families and casual hikers who want to experience beautiful views without committing to a challenging trek.

Regulations

To keep Four Dances beautiful and safe for everyone, some activities aren't allowed. These include horseback riding, fireworks, hang gliding, rock climbing, paintball activities, discharging firearms, and letting your four-legged friends roam off-leash.
