About the Location

Park Overview

Tucked between 68th and Harrison Streets in Omaha, Nebraska, you'll find Seymour Smith Park - a sprawling 197-acre urban space that's been providing outdoor recreation since the 1960s. This green oasis is an excellent backdrop for everything from competitive sports to lazy afternoon picnics.

Athletic Facilities

If you're sports-minded, this park offers numerous options. Baseball fans will appreciate the well-maintained diamond that hosts American Legion Baseball games and functions as home turf for the UNO Mavericks.

Beyond baseball, the park spreads out with multiple softball fields, soccer pitches with lush grass, and football fields - plenty of space to get your game on or cheer from the sidelines.

One of the most heartwarming features here is the wheelchair-accessible softball fields. These special diamonds are home to the AllPlay Miracle "Buddy" Baseball League, creating space for children and young adults with special needs to experience the joy of America's pastime. Complete with concessions and shaded seating, these fields also proudly host the Nebraska Barons Wheelchair Softball Team - World Series champions, no less!

Disc Golf Course

The park's 18-hole disc golf course has been challenging frisbee enthusiasts since 1994. It's an easy walk with most holes spanning 250-350 feet - well-suited for both newcomers and seasoned players.

The course offers some nice variety with A/B tees on most holes, practice baskets, gentle elevation changes, and a gulch that adds a tactical element to your game. While many older trees have been removed over the years, new saplings are growing up, and some fresh pin locations keep things interesting. Fair warning: as one of Omaha's most popular disc golf destinations, it can get pretty crowded on weekends.

Playground and Splash Pad

The all-inclusive playground is a thoughtfully designed space where kids of all abilities can play together. With toddler-friendly ramps accessible to wheelchair users and plenty of rails for support, it's a place where no child feels left out.

When summer temperatures rise, the adjacent splash pad becomes the coolest spot in the park - literally. Nearby shaded picnic areas with canopies offer an excellent perch for parents to relax while keeping an eye on water-soaked kiddos.

Skate Park

The skate park might show its age with some worn concrete and an out-of-commission pool feature, but it still delivers with various ramps and rails that keep local skaters coming back to practice their tricks.

Additional Amenities

Tennis courts and horseshoe pits round out the standard park offerings, but Seymour Smith distinguishes itself with some unexpected features: a soap box derby track and a skeet shooting range across from the sports fields.

Nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts will appreciate that the park connects to the Big Papio Trail system, allowing you to extend your walk or bike ride well beyond park boundaries.

Visitor Information

With its open spaces and winding trails, the park is great for casual strolls or spreading out a blanket for an impromptu picnic. You'll discover picnic tables scattered throughout, with some blessed shade in select spots. If you're planning a cookout, head toward the playground area where grills are available.

Restrooms are on-site but might be locked when sports events aren't happening - in those cases, portable toilets are provided. Parking is plentiful, but be prepared for a bit of dust from the gravel lots during dry spells.

You can enjoy the park daily from 5 AM until 11 PM.

Historical Significance

Beyond its recreational value, Seymour Smith Park has earned its place in sports history as the venue that hosted the first six NCAA Women's College World Series championships from 1982 to 1987.
