About the Location
A Tribute to Henderson's Parks Pioneer
Dundee Jones Park is the newest green space addition to Henderson, Nevada, having opened its gates in May 2023. As the city's 70th park, it honors Dundee Jones himself - the very first Parks and Recreation Department Director who helped transform Henderson into the verdant community it is today.
Location and Size
You'll come across this spacious oasis near the corner of Jeffreys Street and West Horizon Ridge Parkway. Stretching across a whopping 3,659,040 square feet, the park offers something for just about everyone, from the tiniest tots to four-legged friends.
Playgrounds and Splash Pad
Kids have their own age-appropriate spaces here - one playground for the under-5 crowd and another for 5-12 year-olds. Both areas feature shaded covers to keep the desert sun at bay, but you should know that some equipment like swings might still catch those rays.
The safety-focused soft flooring cushions inevitable tumbles, while slides, climbing structures, swings, and a fun spinning merry-go-round keep the energy flowing. The swing area is nicely inclusive, with two baby swings, two standard swings, and two harness egg-type swings designed for children with special needs.
When temperatures climb (as they tend to do in Nevada), the splash pad becomes the place to be, with refreshing water jets springing up from the ground - a simple but effective way to beat the heat.
Dog Park Areas
Four-legged family members haven't been forgotten. The park features two separate off-leash areas - one for the small pups and another for their larger cousins. Each space offers interesting layouts with plenty of room to run and play. You'll come across water stations at the entrances and waste bag dispensers throughout, making it easy to keep things clean.
While shade is somewhat limited, the trade-off is worth it - these areas offer some pretty spectacular views of the Las Vegas Strip shimmering in the distance.
Sports and Recreation Facilities
The two pickleball courts seem to always have locals ready to play. If that's not your game, try the basketball court or volleyball court instead.
A walking trail circles the entire park, complete with exercise stations for those looking to mix up their fitness routine. The expansive grassy fields make perfect spots for impromptu games, family picnics, or just lounging with a good book.
Fly Fishing Themed Elements
One of the more unique aspects of the park is its thoughtful nod to Dundee Jones's passion for fly fishing. Look for the metal trout sculptures swimming through rock streams, fly fishing reel motifs, and a contemplative concrete fly fisherman statue.
Don't miss the large mural on the restroom building - it captures a serene silhouette of someone fly fishing at sunset, with a vibrant green and red fish on the line.
Amenities and Facilities
When hunger strikes, head to one of the covered picnic areas. There's a larger pavilion housing about 6-8 tables and a cozier shelter with a single table for more intimate gatherings. BBQ grills are available and kept in good condition for those who prefer their food fresh off the flame.
Clean restroom facilities include all-gender and family options near the playground. You'll discover a convenient wash basin situated outside between the restroom areas.
If you're planning a special event, check out the information boards near the restrooms for details on reserving picnic areas.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
Beneath the surface beauty lies some serious engineering - including a reinforced concrete box drainage system running through the park's center, connecting to existing drainage points at the north and south streets.
The park connects trail users in West Henderson, with pathways from St. Rose Parkway, Seven Hills, and Anthem areas. The design makes the park both a destination and a connector for the broader community.
One heads-up: the parking lot runs on the small side compared to the park's size and popularity. You might find parking a bit challenging during busy times, especially evenings and weekends, so consider carpooling or alternative transportation if possible.
