About the Location
Park Overview
Set in the northeast corner of Albuquerque, Altura Park sprawls across roughly 7 acres in a unique triangular shape. The park has activities for various interests, whether you want to exercise or relax under the shade of its impressive trees.
Speaking of trees - some of these gentle giants have been standing guard for over 100 years, creating a canopy of shade that makes even the warmest New Mexico days bearable.
A Touch of History
Altura Park has historical significance, with a history that spans more than a century. Interestingly, the park was designed by a woman landscape architect, a notable achievement in the field of urban planning history.
If you wander to one end of the park, you'll encounter "The Guardians" - a collection of sculptures that add an artistic touch to this historic landscape.
What to Do
Feel like getting your steps in? A concrete path stretching about half a mile traces the park's edges, excellent for a quick jog or a leisurely stroll.
The park cleverly balances active and passive spaces, so you can choose your own adventure. Challenge yourself with some athletic activities or find a quiet spot to read a book - the choice is yours.
At the narrower end of the triangle, you'll discover well-maintained tennis courts that are a hit with locals. Nearby, a small playground equipped with monkey bars, swings, and slides keeps the little ones entertained.
Handy Features
Planning a picnic? You're in luck. Concrete picnic tables are scattered within the grounds, but the soft grassy areas are just as ideal for spreading out a blanket.
Dog parents will appreciate the dog waste bag stations positioned around the park. It's no wonder this is a favorite spot for neighborhood pups and their humans.
Note that there aren't permanent restrooms here, however portable toilets sometimes make an appearance during special events.
Community Heart
Altura Park is an important part of its surrounding neighborhood, which dates back to the 1950s.
The park is maintained through a partnership between the city and the Altura Park Neighborhood Association, a group of volunteers who help with upkeep.
As you explore, you might notice memorial plaques on some trees - quiet reminders of the park's deep roots in community history.
Getting There
You'll come across street parking available all along the park's borders, making it easy to visit.
Positioned in a peaceful residential area, the park primarily serves locals but draws visitors from across Albuquerque too.
Weekends tend to be the busiest times, with people making the most of those shady spots and open spaces. But even then, there's always room to find your own little corner of tranquility.
