About Brooklyn Bridge Park

Waterfront Wonderland

Nestled along the East River in Brooklyn, New York, Brooklyn Bridge Park stretches across 85 acres of what was once industrial wasteland. This 1.3-mile ribbon of green runs from Atlantic Avenue up to Jay Street, offering some of the most jaw-dropping views of the Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, and New York Harbor you can find anywhere in the city.

The transformation here is quite impressive - abandoned piers and warehouses have found new life as a public space. The metamorphosis began in 2008, with the final pieces of the puzzle falling into place in 2021.

Design That Dazzles

The brilliant minds at Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates crafted this urban oasis with sustainability at its core. The park unfolds across six piers, each with its own distinct personality and purpose.

Pier 1 welcomes you with rolling lawns where you can simply sprawl out and soak in those panoramic views. If you're feeling more energetic, Pier 2 is your playground - basketball courts, handball, bocce, and a roller skating rink await. Pier 3 offers a more contemplative vibe with its central lawn and granite terrace, while Pier 4 has been thoughtfully designed as a wildlife sanctuary, complete with native plants and tidal pools. Sports enthusiasts gravitate toward Pier 5's fields and picnic spots, and families with kids make a beeline for Pier 6's elaborate playgrounds and gardens.

Throughout the park, a continuous promenade invites you to stroll, jog, or cycle while keeping the spectacular waterfront constantly in view.

Recreation for Everyone

Whether you're a serious athlete or just looking to play, Brooklyn Bridge Park offers plenty of options. The array of courts and fields is impressive - basketball, soccer, volleyball, handball - take your pick.

In summer months, you can even try your hand at kayaking (for free!) or cast a line along the riverfront. The skate park draws enthusiasts of all skill levels, while table tennis tables and fitness equipment offer additional ways to get moving.

The park's playgrounds are a hit with families, especially the nautical-themed one tucked under the Manhattan Bridge. For something a bit more adventurous, DUMBO Boulders offers climbing challenges with an unbeatable backdrop.

More Than Just Pretty Views

The park's calendar stays packed with events year-round. From concerts and outdoor movies to fitness classes and educational programs, there's always something happening.

History buffs will appreciate the preserved elements of the area's industrial past, like the beautifully restored 1920s Jane's Carousel that now spins inside a glass pavilion, or the Empire Stores - a 19th-century warehouse complex reimagined for modern retail and cultural use.

Watching the sun set behind the Manhattan skyline from here is particularly beautiful. And after dark? The city lights reflecting on the water create an entirely different but equally captivating scene.

Green in More Ways Than One

Environmental sustainability isn't just a buzzword here - it's built into the park's DNA. Rainwater harvesting, composting, and solar power all play their part in minimizing the park's footprint.

The salt marshes and native plantings do double duty: creating homes for local wildlife while helping manage stormwater runoff naturally.

All the Comforts

You'll find all the essentials for a comfortable visit. Clean restrooms are available at strategic locations: near the roller skating rink and basketball courts at Pier 2, by the kayak area, and close to the Governor's Island Ferry.

When hunger strikes, you can unpack your own feast at one of the many picnic areas (some even allow BBQing with proper permits), or grab something from the food concessions sprinkled throughout the park. And you won't go thirsty with several drinking water stations available.

Bringing your four-legged friend? You're in luck - the park is particularly dog-friendly, with designated areas where pets can play while you enjoy those iconic views.

A Park With Purpose

Brooklyn Bridge Park has become a magnet for both locals and tourists, drawing millions of visitors each year. It shows how industrial relics can be reimagined as public spaces that benefit both people and the environment.

Many visitors appreciate how it balances natural beauty, recreational options, and quintessential urban vistas. Open daily from 6AM to 1AM, it welcomes everyone from early morning joggers to late-night dreamers gazing at the illuminated skyline.
