About City Hall Park
A Piece of History in Downtown Manhattan
Between the skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan sits City Hall Park, a green space with stories from nearly every chapter of New York's history. Surrounding New York City Hall, this modest but mighty park offers a refreshing break from the concrete jungle of the Civic Center.
This tranquil spot was once simply called the Commons and was used as a pasture for animals during the 1600s. Quite the transformation!

From Pasture to Public Space
The park's history isn't all picnics and pleasant strolls. This land has witnessed the full spectrum of city life - from public executions and an almshouse to a prison and even barracks for soldiers during the American Revolution. If these trees could talk, they'd have quite the historical tales to tell.
The park as we know it began taking shape in the early 19th century alongside City Hall itself, which was built between 1803 and 1812. Since then, it's been where New Yorkers gather to celebrate, protest, meet, and sometimes just catch their breath between meetings.
A Fresh Face for an Old Friend
1999 marked a turning point when the park received a major facelift that brought back much of its 19th-century character. The renovation reintroduced the Jacob Wrey Mould Fountain from 1871 as the centerpiece.
New gardens, walkways, and seating were added, blending historical authenticity with practical design. The fountain continues to be the heart of the park, offering a soothing soundtrack of flowing water against the city's background noise.

The Park Today
During weekday lunch hours, you'll discover the park filled with local office workers escaping their cubicles for some fresh air. Located near several important buildings including City Hall and the Tweed Courthouse, it's a common gathering spot for both government functions and everyday people-watching.
The mature trees provide much-needed shade in summer, while thoughtfully placed benches invite you to sit and stay awhile. Seasonal flower beds add color throughout the year, contrasting with the gray city surroundings.
Worth a Visit
If you've just walked across the Brooklyn Bridge or explored the Financial District, City Hall Park makes for a great resting spot. Its European-inspired design feels charmingly out of place among the modern architecture towering above.
Keep an eye out for the park's resident squirrels - they own the place and aren't afraid to show it. Whether you have ten minutes or an hour, this historic green space provides a quiet break from the city's pace.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM until midnight, making it accessible whether you're an early bird or prefer evening strolls through Lower Manhattan. City Hall Park offers a slower pace amid the typically fast-moving city.
