About Commodore Barry Park

A Piece of Brooklyn History

If you're strolling through Brooklyn and stumble upon Commodore Barry Park, you're actually walking on historic ground. Established back in 1836, this green space holds the title of being the oldest park in Brooklyn. It wasn't always known by its current name though - originally called "City Park," it got its new identity in 1951 to honor Commodore John Barry, the "Father of the U.S. Navy," a fitting tribute given its proximity to the Brooklyn Navy Yard that Barry helped establish.

The park has seen its share of history unfold. During World War I, it temporarily transformed into a makeshift military base, housing 3,000 sailors and marines in wooden barracks (which were thankfully removed in 1919 - imagine how that would cramp the basketball courts!). Its neighbor, the former New York Naval Shipyard (Brooklyn Navy Yard), was once the economic heartbeat of the area, employing a staggering 70,000 people during the height of World War II.

What You'll Find Today

Spanning 10.39 acres (42,000 m²), this park offers plenty of room to breathe amid the city hustle. The eastern side got a nice facelift in 2012, introducing a large central lawn and performance space that's well-suited for community events or just lounging with a good book. The renovation also brought new benches, trees, and updated landscaping around the swimming pool - small touches that make a big difference.

Many locals describe this place as an "oasis in the concrete jungle," and honestly, that's not an exaggeration. When you need a break from Brooklyn's busy streets, this park offers a welcome green escape.

Get Moving

The swimming pool is arguably the park's crown jewel, especially when summer temperatures soar. With its crystal clear water and good maintenance, it's ideal for cooling off or getting in some lap swimming. The pool area generally maintains a friendly vibe, and the facilities are kept clean - always a plus for public pools.

If swimming isn't your thing, there's still plenty to do. The playground is well-maintained and rarely gets too crowded, making it a solid option for families. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the basketball courts, handball courts, and baseball fields that serve everyone from casual players to organized community leagues.

Gather Round

The park has open spaces good for spreading out a blanket if you're planning a picnic or family gathering. Just note that picnic tables are limited, so for bigger get-togethers, you might want to bring your own portable tables. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM, accommodating both early birds and night owls.

Cultural Heartbeat

Beyond recreation, Commodore Barry Park is also a cultural center, particularly for African and African American arts. Since 2001, the International African Arts Festival has brought the park to life during Fourth of July weekend with vibrant displays of African Diasporic folk arts, music, dance, and food that tantalize all your senses.

In 2005, the park became home to the AfroPunk Music Festival, celebrating Black contributions to punk subculture. Though AfroPunk has since moved to new digs, the park continues to host various cultural events throughout the year, maintaining its status as a community gathering place.

Its convenient location near the Brooklyn/Manhattan Bridges and the BQE makes it easily accessible for both locals and visitors interested in Brooklyn culture and history.
