About Betty Carter Park
Location and Significance
Tucked into the heart of Brooklyn's Cultural District, Betty Carter Park is a small but lively green haven where Lafayette Avenue, Fulton Street, St. Felix Street, and Fort Greene Place converge. At just 0.23 acres, this compact space was named in 2019 to honor Betty Carter, the legendary jazz artist who called Fort Greene home. Carter wasn't just any musician; she revolutionized bebop, scat singing, and musical improvisation, leaving an indelible mark on the jazz world.
Given Carter's profound influence and Brooklyn roots, this little park stands as a meaningful tribute to her groundbreaking legacy. If you're relying on public transit, several bus stops sit right next to the park.
Historical Background
Before becoming Betty Carter Park, this spot went by "BAM Park" when it first opened in 1984. Going further back, the land once housed residential and commercial buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. After these structures deteriorated beyond repair, the City of New York stepped in, transforming the neglected area into a public park with designs by Lee Weintraub.
In its early days, the park buzzed with local concerts organized by the Brooklyn Music School. Sadly, structural issues forced its closure in 2005, and the space sat dormant for more than ten years.
Revitalization
Fast forward to 2019, when the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership teamed up with Quennell Rothschild & Partners to breathe new life into the park. Their revitalization maintained the historical essence while introducing contemporary design elements.
The redesign embraces openness with wide, inviting entrances that blend seamlessly with the surrounding streets. What was once an abandoned space is now a quiet retreat from Brooklyn's urban environment.

Features and Design
The park features mature trees that provide shade on hot days and create a natural canopy for visitors. Seasonal flowers and additional greenery enhance the tranquil vibe, making even brief visits refreshing.
You'll find unique "pebble benches" scattered throughout - these organically shaped seating areas made from pre-cast concrete offer comfortable spots to pause and reflect. The raised deck is a stage for performances and public events, honoring the park's artistic roots. Occasionally, the Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts musical performances here, keeping the cultural tradition alive.
Visitor Experience
While Betty Carter Park isn't the place for sprawling picnics or team sports, it shines as a spot for quiet moments. It's fantastic for catching your breath while shopping nearby, waiting for transportation, or simply enjoying a peaceful pause in your day. The intimate scale makes it ideal for solo visitors or small groups rather than large gatherings.
The park's cleanliness and serene atmosphere stand out in the urban landscape. Though you won't find playground equipment or recreational facilities, what you will discover is a meticulously maintained sitting area where the trees and flowers take center stage.
Cultural Impact
Betty Carter Park reflects the cultural and historical character of Fort Greene. It offers a peaceful retreat while occasionally hosting creative performances. The park honors Carter's influence and connects to the neighborhood's artistic heritage.
