About the Location

A Slice of History

Tucked between East 60th and 61st Streets along York Avenue, Twenty-Four Sycamores Park has a pretty fascinating past. Would you believe that most of this neighborhood hangout was once completely underwater? It's true! The original East River shoreline actually cut through what's now the southwestern corner, right where the comfort station stands today.

From Underwater to Underground

Back in the early 18th century, the tiny bit of land that wasn't submerged belonged to Thomas C. Pearsall's farm. The rest? Just East River. It wasn't until the 1920s or 1930s that the underwater portion got filled in, but it sat empty until 1942 when New York State handed it over to the City.

The park officially opened shortly after 1943 when NYC Parks took over the property.

What's in a Name?

The park only got its current name in 1985 - and for a practical reason: protection against real estate developers eyeing the land. Someone actually counted all the London plane trees (commonly called sycamores) in the park, and voilà - Twenty-Four Sycamores Park was born.

These trees aren't just namesakes; they provide shade across the park. You'll find several benches beneath them - nice spots to rest and get out of the summer heat.

Growing with the Times

The park has seen its share of upgrades over the years. In 1995, the handball courts got a makeover, new play equipment arrived, and additions like a spray shower, basketball courts, drinking fountains, and benches made the park more welcoming. They also made sure the whole place was accessible to everyone.

More recently in 2021, the comfort station received a complete rebuild with modern amenities, including a baby changing station and an updated water fountain with a bottle filler - useful additions for visitors.

Game On

If you're into basketball, you'll appreciate the three courts with chain nets that local players frequently use, especially during quieter morning hours. There are also handball courts if that's more your speed.

Interestingly, what was once a tennis court has now been converted to pickleball courts - a sign of changing recreational trends in the neighborhood.

Kid-Friendly Zones

The park smartly divides its playground into two sections - one for the tiny tots and another for older kids. You'll come across various metal play structures, slides, and baby swings throughout.

During summer months, the water feature is popular with kids who splash around to cool off. Fair warning: this area tends to get pretty busy with families, particularly on weekends.

Community Hub

Today, Twenty-Four Sycamores is a gathering place for locals of all ages. Picnic tables scattered throughout make it easy to enjoy a meal outdoors or just hang out with friends.

The location is pretty convenient too - just two blocks from the Roosevelt Island tram and diagonally across from Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. One thing to keep in mind: the nearby FDR Drive and Queensboro Bridge mean this isn't exactly the quietest park in the city. But for many New Yorkers, that background hum is just part of the authentic city experience.
