About Stuyvesant Cove Park in New York
Stuyvesant Cove Park is a 1.9-acre public park located on the East Side of Manhattan in New York City. The park runs along the East River from 18th Street to 23rd Street, situated between the FDR Drive and the waterfront. Established in 2002, it was built on the site of a former concrete plant and parking lot.
The park features a variety of native plants and serves as a wildlife habitat, earning designation as Wildlife Habitat #50805 from the National Wildlife Federation. It is designed as an urban food forest, with many edible and medicinal plants that visitors can learn about and, in some cases, forage. The park's landscaping philosophy emphasizes ecological balance and sustainability, avoiding the use of herbicides or synthetic fertilizers.
Stuyvesant Cove Park is managed by Solar One, a non-profit organization, in partnership with the NYC Economic Development Corporation. Solar One operates an environmental education center within the park, offering programs on sustainable energy and environmental topics. The park serves as an outdoor classroom for these educational initiatives.
In recent years, the park underwent significant renovations as part of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project. This project included the installation of flood protection measures, such as a 10-foot floodwall and flood gates, to protect the surrounding communities from rising sea levels and storm surges.
The park provides a green oasis in a densely populated urban area, offering residents and visitors a chance to connect with nature and enjoy waterfront views. It serves as a segment of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, allowing for continuous waterfront access for pedestrians and cyclists.
