About McKinley Park
History and Origins
Tucked between 73rd Street, Seventh Avenue, 78th Street, and Fort Hamilton Parkway in Brooklyn, McKinley Park is a 7.77-acre green escape with an interesting backstory. Established in 1903, the park was named after William McKinley, the 25th U.S. President (who, fun fact, never actually visited this particular spot).
What's cool about this place is how it's transformed over time. Once a brickyard with a pond, the land has evolved while still keeping touches of its natural character. It's like that friend who's grown up but hasn't lost their essence.
Park Layout
Wander into the northern section and you'll find yourself in what feels like a little woodland getaway. With remnants of the old Highlawn Woods, this area offers shady trees and winding paths that make for a peaceful escape from city life.
Head south and the park takes on a more typical city park vibe with playgrounds, sports areas, and open spaces great for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a sandwich.
In 1979, the southern half got a name change to honor two treasured local pastors from St. Epherem's Church: Father Richard A. Kennedy and Monsignor Edward J. Sweeney. And if you make your way to the very southern tip where Seventh Avenue meets Fort Hamilton Parkway, you'll be standing in what's been called Kathy Reilly Triangle since 2000 - a nod to a local resident who made real impacts on community life.

Recreational Facilities
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just let the kids burn off some energy, McKinley Park offers several options. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, and bocce courts (if you've never tried bocce, here's your chance!).
Kids absolutely love the playground's pirate-themed structure, complete with swings and a climbing wall sized just right for little adventurers. During summer, the water sprinklers become the neighborhood hotspot for cooling down - just listen for the squeals of delight and you'll find them.
There's also a dedicated fitness area with equipment for outdoor workouts. You'll often spot locals doing pull-ups or dips here, getting their exercise with a dose of fresh air.
Natural Features
One of the best things about McKinley Park is its generous tree canopy, offering blessed shade during those sweltering New York summer days. The central hill area adds some nice dimension to the landscape - and transforms into prime sledding territory after a good snowfall.
The open grassy spaces are great for everything from impromptu picnics to lazy afternoon reading sessions. It's this mix of woodsy areas and open fields that gives the park its character, creating different moods within one relatively compact space.
Community Impact
For Bay Ridge residents, McKinley Park isn't just a park - it's where memories are made. First bike rides, family gatherings, morning jogs, and chance encounters with neighbors all happen here.
Over the years, the park has seen numerous improvements thanks to local community groups, elected officials, and the dedicated park workers who keep the place looking good day after day.
Getting here is pretty straightforward with bus stops near the entrances, and you can usually find street parking on the surrounding roads without too much trouble.
