About Travers Park
Park Overview
Set in the heart of Jackson Heights, Queens, Travers Park is a cozy 2-acre green oasis that is a community living room for this bustling NYC neighborhood. Tucked between 77th and 78th Streets along 34th Avenue, this compact urban retreat offers locals a much-needed break from the concrete jungle surrounding it.
Named after Thomas J. Travers, a dedicated Jackson Heights community advocate, the park was established in 1948 and officially opened its gates in 1949. It welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 9PM - fantastic for early morning joggers and evening strollers alike.
Expansions and Improvements
Travers Park has grown up alongside its community. In 2012, the park got a significant upgrade when a section of 78th Street was transformed into a pedestrian plaza, adding 10,000 square feet of people-friendly space.
The park expanded again in 2013 when it incorporated a 24,600-square-foot asphalt play yard previously owned by the Garden School. Most recently, a 2020 renovation updated the space, adding a great lawn surrounded by flowering trees, benches, and a performance area with stadium seating.
Recreation Facilities
Despite its modest size, Travers Park offers a variety of recreational options. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the basketball courts, handball courts, and tennis courts. There's also fitness equipment available if you're looking to squeeze in an outdoor workout.
Families with kids will appreciate the thoughtfully designed playground areas - a gated section for the little ones aged 2-5 years, and a separate area for children aged 5-12 years. When summer temperatures climb, the water sprinklers become the park's most popular feature.
The dog run is divided into areas for small and large dogs, with water fountains and hoses available for dogs during play sessions.

Community Significance
Travers Park holds special importance in Jackson Heights, particularly because City Council District 25 ranks second-to-last citywide in terms of available park space. This makes this green space particularly important to residents.
The park functions as a community gathering spot year-round. On Sundays, the Jackson Heights Greenmarket brings fresh produce and local goods to the neighborhood. During warmer months, "Summer Sundays in the Park" fills the air with music from diverse performers. Visitors can even join free Zumba and yoga classes on Saturday mornings when the weather cooperates.
Amenities and Accessibility
Recent updates have made Travers Park more welcoming to everyone. The children's playground was renovated to full Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, ensuring kids aged 5 to 10 can play regardless of mobility challenges.
You'll find various seating options - from traditional benches to picnic tables and a grassy hill where you can read or enjoy the sunshine. Restrooms are available on-site, but keep in mind they typically close early in the evening.
Atmosphere and Safety
The park's atmosphere reflects Jackson Heights itself - family-friendly, multicultural, and diverse. The surrounding pedestrian plazas create a safe, car-free environment where kids can play with a bit more freedom.
During daylight hours, the park feels safe and well-maintained. Weekends bring the space to life with family gatherings and community events. Like most urban parks, the vibe changes after sunset, when the crowds thin and some visitors may feel less comfortable.
