About Riverside Park

Historic Design

The brainchild of Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1870s, Riverside Park stands as one of just eight officially designated scenic landmarks in NYC. This green oasis stretches four miles along the Hudson River from 72nd to 158th Street, encompassing about 253 acres of urban respite.

Unique Layout

What makes this park special is its multi-tiered design that cleverly accommodates different activities. The top level features Riverside Drive, where impressive apartment buildings and institutions follow its winding path.

One level down, you'll discover a spacious, tree-lined promenade with benches well-suited for taking in those river views. The middle section offers steep, grassy slopes intersected by wandering pathways, steps, and ramps that invite exploration.

Park Expansion

The 1930s saw a westward expansion when the New York Central Railroad tracks were covered, creating a plateau that now hosts a lovely promenade for walkers and cyclists alike. This area includes various playgrounds and recreational spots for community enjoyment.

The lowest level, built on landfill, provides space for more recreational areas and the Henry Hudson Parkway. A more recent addition, Riverside Park South, extends this green haven further south to 59th Street.

Scenic Beauty

The views here are simply stunning - the Hudson River stretches before you with the New Jersey Palisades creating a dramatic backdrop. It's no wonder locals and visitors alike flock here for moments of peace or active outdoor enjoyment.

The park's design thoughtfully incorporates the natural landscape, creating a seamless blend of manicured areas and open spaces that make you forget how narrow the park actually is. The park is especially beautiful at sunset, when the river reflects the day's end in a palette of vibrant colors.

Recreational Activities

For the active crowd, this park offers numerous options. You can test your skills on tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and volleyball courts - including beach volleyball. Skateboarders particularly appreciate the popular skate bowl where they can practice tricks and techniques.

Families will find multiple playgrounds within the park, with water features that offer cool relief during hot summer days. Dog owners can let their furry friends run free in designated dog runs where pets socialize off-leash.

Don't miss the Cherry Walk in spring - when those cherry blossoms burst into soft pink blooms, creating one of the most picturesque settings in the city for a leisurely stroll or capturing that perfect photo.

Park Management

This urban space is maintained through a partnership between the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the Riverside Park Conservancy.

Cultural Features

History buffs will appreciate the park's cultural landmarks, including Grant's Tomb, an impressive memorial to President Ulysses S. Grant. As you explore, you'll discover various statues thoughtfully placed along the eastern ridge.

Movie fans might recognize the 91st Street Garden, which had its moment of fame in "You've Got Mail" - it's a charming community garden lovingly maintained by local volunteers. When hunger strikes, head to Ellington in the Park restaurant where you can grab a bite while enjoying those spectacular river views.
