About Duarte Square
Historical Background
Situated in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, Juan Pablo Duarte Square is a charming triangular green space that offers a quiet escape from the city buzz. This compact 0.45-acre park sits at the intersection of Sixth Avenue (or Avenue of the Americas), Canal Street, Grand Street, and Sullivan Street.
The park has quite the backstory. It was once part of farmland owned by Trinity Church back in the late 1600s, and has worn many hats throughout the centuries. In 1945, it officially became Duarte Square, named after Juan Pablo Duarte, one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic. This timing wasn't coincidental - it happened alongside the dedication of Avenue of the Americas, both celebrating a spirit of Pan-American unity.
Park Highlights
The centerpiece of the square is undoubtedly the impressive bronze statue of Duarte that commands attention. Standing 13 feet tall on an 8-foot granite pedestal, this striking monument was created by Italian sculptor Nicola Arrighini and dedicated by the Dominican Consulate in 1978.
The statue isn't just a standalone piece - it's actually part of a collection of six monuments honoring Latin American leaders that line Avenue of the Americas. Duarte is portrayed in a moment of patriotic reverence, holding his hat in one hand while placing the other over his heart, symbolizing his dedication to Dominican independence.
Today's Square
Over time, the park has evolved into a more inviting space with the addition of benches, trees, and paved walkways. It's nothing fancy, but that's part of its charm. The shade trees and open grassy areas create a pleasant spot where both curious tourists and local students come to take a breather from Manhattan's non-stop energy.
Beyond being a quiet place to relax, the square regularly hosts community gatherings and is the starting point for the annual Five Boro Bike Tour, one of New York's biggest cycling events.
The park has even played a role in recent history - you might remember it as one of the sites associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011. Today, this modest square represents the cultural connections between New York City and the Dominican Republic.
