About the Location

History and Transformation

Found in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx, Estella Diggs Park spans a modest 0.9 acres (0.36 ha), but don't let its size fool you. This little green haven has quite the backstory. Once just a vacant lot left behind after buildings were abandoned and demolished in the 1960s, it's since become something special for the community.

The New York City Parks Department took ownership of the property in 1978, and for a brief moment, it flourished as a community garden before emptiness claimed it again. In 1990, they acquired additional lots and gave it its first official name: Rocks and Roots Park - a fitting title that hinted at its natural character.

Redesign and Dedication

Fast forward to 2011, when the park got a complete makeover courtesy of Nancy Owens Studio. They did something really thoughtful here - preserving the natural contours while adding places for people to gather, accessible walking paths, and gardens that change with the seasons. On November 7, 2011, the park was renamed to honor Estella Diggs, a local hero who actually attended the dedication ceremony alongside community leaders and a choir from her church.

Natural Design Elements

What makes this park stand out is how it embraces what nature already provided. Walking through, you'll notice gently sloping hills that somehow remind you of a Chinese landscape painting. The rock outcropping is particularly striking - it's almost as if someone designed a miniature version of the Bronx itself, capturing the borough's characteristic rugged hills and greenery in this tiny pocket park.

Keep an eye out for the beautiful boulders scattered throughout. They're not just random rocks - they add character and create a sense that you've stumbled upon something unique. There's an intimacy to this space that feels like finding a secret garden in the middle of the city.

Amenities and Features

If you're bringing kids along, head to the lower section where you'll find a playground that blends nicely with the park's natural aesthetic. It's not huge, but it gets the job done for little ones needing to burn off some energy.

You'll also find plenty of places to sit throughout the park, whether you're looking to read a book, chat with a friend, or just take a moment to breathe. Some locals even use the space for yoga or just quiet reflection away from the city buzz.

Recent Improvements

The park got even better in recent years. Construction began in 2015 on the lowland section, and when it reopened on August 29, 2017, it revealed a $2 million expansion that transformed previously vacant space into additional lawns, paths, and seating areas, plus new play equipment for the kids.

Though small in size, Estella Diggs Park offers something many urban spaces lack - a genuine connection to nature within city limits. It's a place where the landscape itself tells a story, and where neighbors can find a moment of peace without having to leave their community behind.
