About the Location
Historical Background
Tucked between the Kingsbridge and Riverdale neighborhoods in the Bronx, Ewen Park is an 8-acre glimpse of hillside greenery with a story to tell. This peaceful spot was once part of the estate belonging to Brigadier General John Ewen, who wasn't just a Civil War veteran but also made his mark as a successful businessman and later as New York City's Comptroller.
The park took shape in 1935 after Eliza Ewen donated the land to the city as a tribute to her father John. What a legacy!
Distinctive Features
The "CLX Steps" are quite notable - a massive staircase connecting communities at different elevations. Originally 160 steps (now 158 after renovations), this impressive climb is marked by granite posts with Roman numerals at each end. If you're a fan of autumn scenery, these steps look especially beautiful during fall when they're carpeted with colorful leaves.
Beyond the stairs, the park offers lovely views and serves as a peaceful green retreat for locals. When winter blankets the area with snow, the park's slopes become a popular sledding spot that attracts families from the area.
Recreational Amenities
Looking for a quiet place to shoot some hoops? The park's basketball court is somewhat hidden away from the main areas, making it great for those who prefer practicing without the crowds and commotion of busier courts.
For the little ones, there's a small playground primarily designed with toddlers in mind. The park is also getting some upgrades with what locals have dubbed an "adult playground" - likely some fitness equipment that older visitors can enjoy.
Dog owners, take note: the dog-friendly area gives your four-legged friends space to run and play, but you might find the grass a bit overgrown at times. It's still a great spot for dogs to burn off energy and socialize with their furry neighbors.
Landscape and Atmosphere
What really defines Ewen Park is its lush greenery and serene vibe. The hillside setting creates a natural oasis that feels surprisingly removed from city life - excellent for when you need a moment to breathe and reset.
Be prepared for a workout, though! The significant elevation changes across the park mean you'll definitely feel it in your legs. Consider these inclined paths and stairs your opportunity for some exercise with a view.
Community Involvement
Over the decades, Ewen Park has seen several renovations, including work to maintain its iconic staircase. More recently, community groups have taken an active role in planting native species and caring for the park's natural areas.
The Stewards of Ewen Park, a dedicated group of local volunteers, regularly organize cleanups and plantings to boost biodiversity. Despite their efforts, some areas of the park could use additional maintenance - maybe an opportunity to get involved if you're a local looking to make a difference.
