About Greenacre Park in New York
A Hidden Oasis
Greenacre Park is a small urban oasis located in Midtown Manhattan between 2nd and 3rd Avenues on East 51st Street. Opened in 1971, this privately-owned public space measures just 6,360 square feet in size.
Dramatic Waterfall
The park's centerpiece is a dramatic 25-foot high waterfall that cascades down a wall of sculpted granite blocks. The sound of the falling water helps mask city noise and creates a peaceful atmosphere.
The park is composed of three distinct levels, with the lowest level featuring a sunken seating area at the base of the waterfall.
Lush Landscaping
Lush plantings throughout the park include honey locust trees, ivies, azaleas, and seasonal flowers in urns. Movable tables and chairs allow visitors flexibility in how they use the space.
A raised terrace area is covered by a trellis with acrylic domes and contains heating elements for use in cooler weather.
Design and Recognition
Designed by Hideo Sasaki and Harmon Goldstone, Greenacre Park exemplifies the "vest-pocket park" style that became popular in dense urban areas in the 1970s. The park provides Midtown office workers, residents and visitors with a tranquil spot for relaxation, eating lunch, or taking a break from the busy city streets just steps away.
In 2018, Greenacre Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its innovative design and cultural significance as an urban green space.
