About Marcus Garvey Park
A Historic Hilltop Haven
Perched between Harlem and East Harlem in Manhattan, Marcus Garvey Park spans a generous 20.16 acres around a dramatic outcropping of Manhattan schist that boldly interrupts Fifth Avenue's path. The park's story begins in 1840 when it opened as Mount Morris Park, but in 1973, it was renamed to honor Marcus Garvey, the influential Black nationalist leader and activist. For generations, this green space has been an important gathering place for locals.

Nature Meets History on the Hill
The park's crown jewel is undoubtedly its rocky hill, offering a peaceful escape from city streets with rewarding views from the top. Standing sentinel at the summit is the Harlem Fire Watchtower - a 47-foot cast-iron structure built in 1856 that's the last of its kind in New York City. This recently restored tower was designated a New York City landmark in 1967 and draws curious visitors up the hill to admire this piece of urban history.
As you wander the grounds, you might spot several little free libraries - charming book houses perched on poles filled with donated reads that neighborhood kids and bookworms can borrow at their leisure.
Recreation for Everyone
Surrounding the rocky centerpiece, you'll find inviting lawns, winding paths, and the shade of mature trees. The park embraces inclusivity with multiple playgrounds, including two specifically designed for children with disabilities.
Looking to stay active? Take your pick from the swimming pool, basketball courts, or baseball field. Fitness buffs can get their heart rates up using the outdoor fitness equipment or tackling the park's stairs for a serious cardio challenge.
Four-legged friends haven't been forgotten - a thoughtfully designed dog run with separate areas for large and small pups gives dogs space to play and socialize. When family gatherings call, head to the grilling areas equipped with barbecue pits and picnic tables for communal feasting.

Cultural Heartbeat
The Richard Rodgers Amphitheater, named for the legendary composer who grew up in the neighborhood, transforms into a cultural hotspot during summer. This outdoor venue hosts an impressive lineup of free events including performances by the Classical Theater of Harlem, the soulful sounds of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, various concerts, and moonlit movie screenings.
Summer Stage and other cultural happenings bring neighbors together throughout the warmer months, with entertainment options for all ages. You'll appreciate the comfortable bleacher-style seating with its excellent sightlines from every angle.
As one of Manhattan's oldest public squares, Marcus Garvey Park continues to be both a cherished green retreat and a living connection to Harlem's rich history. The park is busiest during daylight hours when families, fitness enthusiasts, and neighbors gather to enjoy this historic space.
