About Mount Carmel Triangle
A Slice of Brooklyn History
Tucked away at the intersection of Union Avenue, Meeker Avenue, and Jackson Street, Mount Carmel Triangle is a humble yet meaningful pocket park in Brooklyn. This triangular oasis commemorates what was once the home of the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, before the church reluctantly made way for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway construction back in the 1940s.
The church eventually found a new home elsewhere, but this special corner was designated as parkland in 1944 through a thoughtful collaboration between NYC Parks and the local parish - a small but significant victory for preserving neighborhood history.
Small Space, Meaningful Details
What Mount Carmel Triangle lacks in size, it makes up for in character. At its heart stands a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the skilled handiwork of sculptor Pete Donohue, added during the park's 1987 refresh. The space blends paved areas with touches of greenery, creating a calm respite from Brooklyn's constant motion.
If you visit, you'll likely notice fresh flowers at the statue's base - a colorful testament to the community's ongoing care. The benches positioned behind the memorial invite you to sit for a moment of quiet contemplation facing the statue, perhaps to rest your feet or simply watch the world go by.
A Neighborhood's Heart
This space honors the Italian-American immigrants who established the original Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the late 19th century. It's a physical reminder of the cultural heritage that shaped the Williamsburg neighborhood, which once housed a thriving Italian-American community.
This quiet corner holds its ground amidst Brooklyn's urban landscape - a peaceful pocket that connects today's residents to the area's rich history. While neighborhoods change and evolve, Mount Carmel Triangle remains as a touchstone to the cultural foundations that still influence the area today.

Beyond its historical significance, the triangle serves practical purposes for locals. Dog owners appreciate the pet-friendly policy, often stopping by with their leashed companions for a quick breather.
The park stays impressively clean and well-maintained, with a convenient trash bin helping to keep things tidy. Whether morning, afternoon, or evening, this spot maintains a relatively peaceful atmosphere - a small urban retreat when you need a moment away from the city.
