About Pier 76

Riverside Retreat

Perched on Manhattan's west side at West 38th Street and 12th Avenue, Pier 76 is a refreshing addition to Hudson River Park's waterfront offerings. This 5.6-acre public space, which opened in June 2021, has undergone quite the transformation from its previous life as a New York City Police Department tow pound.

Now, it's a place where you can breathe in fresh river air while taking in sweeping views of the Hudson and the New Jersey skyline. The preserved steel framework of the old structure adds character to the space and provides welcome shade on sunny days. The unobstructed western exposure makes for excellent sunset viewing.

Space & Style

The pier maintains a clean, open aesthetic with its primarily paved surface, softened by planters featuring trees and greenery. There's something refreshingly minimalist about the design that creates a blank canvas for whatever activity you might have in mind.

Since opening, this flexible space has been home to an impressive lineup of cultural events. The pier has hosted outdoor films during the Tribeca Film Festival, food festivals, jazz and blues concerts, and weekly summer salsa dancing lessons.

If you're curious about the area's past, take a moment with the interpretive plaques scattered throughout the pier. They offer fascinating insights into the local history and ecology, including the pier's former role in New York's bustling maritime industry.

And yes, there are typically portable restrooms available, particularly during events - a practical consideration for any extended visit.

Getting Active

The smooth, expansive layout of Pier 76 makes it a magnet for wheels of all kinds. The even surface attracts people roller skating, inline skating, skateboarding, and cycling.

Whether you're just starting out or have been skating for years, the terrain is accommodating. Beyond the active pursuits, the pier offers a surprisingly peaceful escape from city life.

You can grab a bench to sit and think, but it's worth noting that some benches oddly face away from those gorgeous water views. Dog owners appreciate the open space for their four-legged friends, while photographers find endless inspiration in the juxtaposition of urban and natural landscapes.

Maritime Memory

One of the pier's most striking features is a massive 73,000-pound propeller from the S.S. United States, standing as both an impressive sculpture and a nod to the area's seafaring past. If maritime history interests you, take some time to explore the displays about the ocean liners that once called this area home.

They offer a glimpse into New York's significant role in transatlantic travel during a bygone era.

Seasonal Happenings

As temperatures rise, Pier 76 comes alive with seasonal programming. The Thursday evening salsa classes during summer are a local favorite, offering free instruction with the Hudson River as your backdrop.

Other regular events transform this otherwise simple space into vibrant community gatherings, from the Latin Food Festival to the Blues and BBQ Festival, complete with live music, diverse food options, and cultural performances.

Looking Ahead

While Pier 76 currently is an interim public space, it's worth noting that long-term plans include eventual redevelopment as part of Hudson River Park's ongoing evolution. Future changes aim to balance public parkland with features that generate revenue to support the park's maintenance and operations.
