About St. James Park

A Touch of History in the Bronx

Located between Jerome and Creston Avenues is an 11.5-acre green space that's been part of the neighborhood since 1897. St. James Park wasn't always the vibrant space you see today - it began as a marshy lowland before being transformed with soil and ash into something beautiful. Named after the St. James Episcopal Church that still stands just south on Jerome Avenue, this park has deep roots in the community.

Growing with the Times

Like a good wine, St. James Park has only gotten better with age. The early 1900s saw the addition of a music pavilion (1903) and tennis courts (1904). Between 1935 and 1937, the park underwent a major glow-up, gaining a playground and a recreation building that still serves the community today.

The brick recreation center with its distinctive slate roof has weathered decades of Bronx history. More recently, the park expanded its welcome to include a dog park area and revamped playground facilities - keeping things fresh while honoring its historic character.

What You'll Find Here

The heart of St. James Park features a central mall with wide, bench-lined paths facing a green turf panel - a much more pleasant sight than the dusty street extension it once was. Head south and you'll discover a sprawling lawn fantastic for spreading out a picnic blanket, while the northern section is where all the action happens.

Get Your Game On

Athletic types, rejoice! The park is home to basketball courts, tennis courts, a soccer field, and volleyball courts that draw players of all skill levels. Just a heads-up: the soccer field, while popular, can get a bit soggy after rain.

If you're looking to exercise without a game, the park has outdoor exercise equipment that's free for everyone to use. Whether you're training seriously or just getting some light activity, there's space for you here.

Kid-Friendly Corners

The recently upgraded playground becomes a hive of activity on weekends and summer days, filled with the sounds of laughter and the occasional tantrum (hey, it happens to the best of us). When the mercury rises, the splash pad becomes the neighborhood's most popular spot - and possibly the happiest place in the Bronx.

For the Fur Families

Dog parents, you haven't been forgotten! The newer dog run area has quickly become a canine social club where pups can romp off-leash while their humans chat about - what else? - their dogs. Remember to clean up after your four-legged friends so everyone can enjoy a poop-free park experience.

Comfort and Convenience

The thoughtful landscaping includes plenty of trees and shrubs that provide welcome shade on hot days. Concrete benches scattered throughout offer perfect perches for people-watching, reading, or just catching your breath. Drinking fountains keep everyone hydrated, and yes, there are restroom facilities available - though they can get busy during peak times.

Need to check your email or post that perfect park selfie? The park offers WiFi connectivity so you can stay connected even while enjoying the outdoors.

The Heart of the Community

During warmer months, families spread out picnic blankets, and you'll hear multilingual conversations throughout the park. From bird watchers to basketball players, the park welcomes a diverse group of visitors.

And if you work up an appetite, you might be lucky enough to catch one of the street vendors selling fruit and snacks nearby - a fantastic way to refuel after a day of park adventures.
