About Twentyfour Sycamores Park in New York

Twenty-Four Sycamores Park is a neighborhood park located in New York City, situated between East 60th and 61st Streets along York Avenue. The park's history is intertwined with the development of the surrounding area. Historically, most of the park's land was underwater, with the original East River shoreline cutting along the southwestern corner where the comfort station now stands.

In the early 18th century, the small portion of land above water was part of Thomas C. Pearsall's farm. The underwater portion was filled in during the 1920s or 1930s but remained vacant until 1942 when the State of New York granted it to the City. The park officially opened shortly after 1943 when the property was transferred to NYC Parks.

The park's name, given in 1985, served as a protective measure against potential real estate development. The name references the London plane trees, also known as sycamores, that were carefully counted within the park.

Over the years, Twenty-Four Sycamores Park has undergone several renovations and improvements. In 1995, existing handball courts were reconstructed, new play equipment was installed, and additions such as a spray shower, basketball courts, drinking fountains, and benches were made. The site was also made universally accessible. More recently, in 2021, the comfort station was rebuilt.

Today, Twenty-Four Sycamores Park serves as a popular recreational space for the local community, offering a variety of amenities for visitors of all ages.
