About the Location
A Walk Through History
Located in the Bronx lies Walter Gladwin Park, a green haven with a story to tell. Formerly known as Tremont Park, it was renamed in 2020 to honor Walter H. Gladwin (1902-1988), who broke barriers as the first Black elected governmental official in the Bronx.
Spanning roughly 15 acres at the meeting point of East Tremont Avenue and Arthur Avenue, this park has seen the neighborhood transform around it. Before the Cross Bronx Expressway sliced through the area in 1945, these grounds were actually part of the larger Crotona Park - a little bit of urban planning history hiding in plain sight.
What You'll Find
The moment you step into Walter Gladwin Park, you'll notice the rolling hills that sweep through the landscape - a charming reminder that this was once part of rural Westchester County countryside.
The park offers green lawns ideal for sprawling out with a book, and shaded trails that provide a welcome escape from the concrete jungle. These quiet spaces make ideal spots for a moment of calm or a peaceful stroll.
History buffs will appreciate the grand staircase from 1899 that still stands within the park. This impressive structure once connected the old Bronx Borough Hall (demolished in 1969) to Third Avenue below - a literal step into the past.
Recreation for Everyone
If you're bringing the kids along, you'll come across two playgrounds complete with sprinklers that become the neighborhood's favorite cooling station during sweltering summer days.
Sports more your thing? The park houses a baseball field where future MVPs practice their swings, and handball courts that attract competitive players and beginners alike.
The fixed picnic areas make this park a natural gathering spot for birthday celebrations and family reunions. There are also BBQ areas available in designated spots - just remember to clean up afterward.
Natural Touches
The canopy of trees around the park creates patches of dappled sunlight and cool shade, while supporting local birds and wildlife. On clear days, the open spaces frame lovely views of the Bronx skyline and blue skies above.
Perhaps the most tranquil spot is the park's waterfall - a surprising natural feature that adds a soundtrack of gentle rushing water as you explore.
Looking Forward
The park continues to evolve with the community around it. The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation works alongside dedicated groups like Friends of Tremont Park to maintain this urban oasis through regular clean-ups and improvement projects.
Exciting developments are on the horizon too, with plans for the Walter Gladwin Recreation Center set to bring inclusive fitness amenities and programming for neighbors of all ages and abilities.
The park welcomes you daily from 6AM to 10PM - whether you're shooting hoops at dawn or enjoying the evening coolness after dinner. It's more than just a park; it's a community living room where the Bronx comes together.
