About the Location
A Lakeside Spot with a Rich Past
Found on the shores of Lake Ontario in Rochester's northernmost reaches is Ontario Beach Park - a 39-acre lakeside area that's been popular with locals and travelers for over a hundred years. The park features one of the Great Lakes' natural sand beaches, providing a waterfront escape without traveling far from the city.
Back in the early 1900s, this spot earned the nickname the "Coney Island of the West" thanks to its bustling attractions, hotels, and amusements. While much has changed since those days, you can still catch glimpses of its storied past, most notably in the 1905 Dentzel Menagerie Carousel that continues to spin and bring smiles to faces for just $1 per ride - a charming throwback to simpler times.
Get Moving or Just Relax
If you're looking to break a sweat or simply unwind, Ontario Beach Park offers plenty of options. The beach offers swimming and sunbathing when conditions permit. Just a heads-up: water quality can be hit or miss due to pollution from the nearby Genesee River, so it's worth checking online or calling ahead if swimming is on your agenda.
One of our favorite features is the long pier that stretches into Lake Ontario. It's great for a leisurely walk while taking in panoramic views - especially nice at sunset when the colors fill the sky. If you're into fishing and have a valid license, cast a line from the pier and see what bites.
For the more active visitors, the park includes beach volleyball courts hosting summer leagues, plus basketball courts, bocce areas, and open spaces for soccer - a good variety for sports enthusiasts.
Family Fun for Everyone
Got kids in tow? The playground facilities include modern essentials - slides, swings, and climbing ropes, plus additions like a mini zip line and an in-ground merry-go-round that children typically enjoy.
When summer temperatures rise, the spacious splash pad offers a spot for cooling off with water play.
Scattered around the grounds are numerous picnic areas with built-in grills, tables, and benches - suitable for impromptu lunches or planned gatherings. For larger events, several pavilions are available for reservation.
We appreciate the park's commitment to accessibility - a blue carpet laid across the sand provides wheelchair access to the beach area, making nature's beauty available to visitors with mobility challenges.
Community Vibes and Seasonal Celebrations
The park hosts a year-round calendar of events. Summer evenings feature a free concert series at the performance pavilion every Wednesday, with music performances under open skies.
Annual traditions like Harborfest bring food vendors, live music, and ship light shows to the park. The park also hosts seasonal celebrations and holiday fireworks throughout the year.
Good to Know Before You Go
Open daily from 7AM to 11PM year-round, the park offers flexibility for early birds and night owls alike. Its position at the Genesee River's mouth lets you watch boats navigating the Port of Rochester - an interesting sight for many visitors.
Parking is free and plentiful, but you might want to arrive early during summer weekends or special events when spaces fill quickly. And if you work up an appetite, you're in luck - the surrounding Charlotte neighborhood offers plenty of dining options, including the famous Abbott's Frozen Custard, excellent for extending your lakeside adventure.
