About the Location
A Woodland Escape
Found in the Len's Branch floodplain, MacDonald Woods Park is a quiet retreat that transforms after heavy rains - sometimes literally underwater! Don't worry though, this just adds to its ever-changing character.
As you wander the winding paths through the tree-filled landscape, you'll appreciate the generous shade canopy that makes this spot a cool retreat when temperatures climb. The creek that meanders through the park is a particular highlight, with banks accessible enough for little explorers to wade and discover. Come summer evenings, the park transforms into a natural light show as fireflies dance through the trees - a magical experience if you time your visit right.
Beyond the Park Boundaries
The Hinshaw Greenway cuts through the eastern side of the park and leads to a pedestrian bridge spanning US Highway 1/64. This connection is pretty handy - it takes you directly to the Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park, about a 3/4 mile stroll away.
As part of Cary's extensive greenway network, the trail opens up possibilities for longer adventures beyond the park itself. You'll likely cross paths with joggers, cyclists, and neighbors walking their dogs - it's very much a community space where friendly nods are exchanged.
Playground Paradise
The park thoughtfully separates play areas by age group. The smallest visitors have their own dedicated space with toddler-friendly equipment, while kids 5-12 years old can tackle the larger structure with its multiple ladders, slides, monkey bars, and challenging rope climbing wall.
The swings cater to both little ones and bigger kids, while the spinny cups, seesaw, and nostalgic merry-go-round offer those classic playground experiences we all remember. There's even a unique tulip toy you won't find at many other parks - always a hit with the curious climbers.
Safety and accessibility are clearly priorities here, with rubber surfacing throughout the playground. The well-spaced equipment means children of different ages can play without constantly bumping into each other - something parents will definitely appreciate.
Beyond a Playground
When you're ready to move beyond the play structures, you'll come across plenty of other options to enjoy. The open field provides space for impromptu games or for your leashed dog to explore. Picnic tables scattered throughout make this a great lunch spot, and the full-size basketball court attracts players of all skill levels.
Need a pit stop? The clean, spacious restroom facility near the road entrance includes a single toilet and changing table, with enough room to maneuver strollers - a thoughtful touch for families.
Finding Your Way
Set in a peaceful residential area, MacDonald Woods offers a quiet retreat away from the usual hustle. You can access the main park from street level via either stairs or a ramp.
Note that there's no dedicated parking lot - you'll need to find street parking along Seabrook Avenue. This usually isn't an issue during weekdays, but weekend visits might require a bit more patience to find a spot when the park is busier.
