About the Location

A Green Oasis in Greensboro

Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, Southwest Park spreads across a generous 513 acres of natural beauty. This peaceful retreat is a joint effort between Guilford County and the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority. What makes this park stand out? Its immaculate grounds, tranquil atmosphere, and the variety of outdoor adventures waiting for everyone from solo hikers to families with energetic kids and four-legged friends.

Trails That Take You Places

Lacing through the park are several hiking and biking trails that showcase nature's changing canvas throughout the seasons. Currently, there are about 5 miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts, with more pathways in development.

If you prefer something more structured, the paved road and walking track offer smooth sailing for casual strolls or cycling sessions. While there are signs throughout, first-timers might want to take a quick look at the park layout before venturing too deep into the trail network.

Make a Splash on the Reservoir

The Randleman Regional Reservoir is arguably the crown jewel of Southwest Park. This expansive body of water is a paradise for boating and fishing lovers. You can bring your own vessel or rent canoes, kayaks, or jon boats from the marina if you're traveling light. Many locals swear it's one of the best fishing spots around, so don't forget your tackle box!

The boat launch area comes complete with both boat and fishing docks, but be prepared for a somewhat steep ramp. Just keep in mind that swimming, water skiing, jet skis, and gasoline motors aren't allowed on the reservoir. Also worth noting: the lake takes a break from boating and fishing activities on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Paws and Play

Dog owners, rejoice! The dog park here features three fenced areas, including separate zones for your big and small furry friends. It's clean, well-kept, and gives dogs the freedom to run and socialize off-leash while you catch up with fellow pet parents in the fresh air.

Thoughtful touches like fresh water and bowls for thirsty pups make this spot extra special. There's typically a friendly vibe with pet owners introducing their dogs to potential new playmates. And if your dog still has energy to burn after the dog park, leashed walks are welcome throughout most of the park, including near the water.

Kid-Friendly Fun

Got little ones in tow? Southwest Park has two full playgrounds designed for children ranging from toddlers to pre-teens. The equipment is clean and accessible, giving kids a safe space to climb, slide, and let their imaginations run wild.

For family gatherings or celebrations, the park offers five covered shelters complete with large grills, electricity, and water. The maintenance team keeps these areas clean, regularly emptying trash cans throughout the day. Each shelter area also features horseshoe pits for a bit of friendly competition.

Get Your Game On

Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the park's athletic fields and baseball field for everything from organized team practices to impromptu games. The grounds are well-maintained, ready for various activities.

Beyond the designated sports areas, you'll discover plenty of open grassy spaces great for tossing a frisbee, playing catch, or simply spreading out a blanket for a peaceful afternoon in nature. It's this blend of structured facilities and open spaces that makes the park so versatile.

Practical Matters

You'll find clean restrooms near each shelter, typically well-stocked with the essentials. There's also plenty of parking available within the park.

The park welcomes visitors Wednesday through Sunday from 7AM to 5:30PM, and takes a breather on Mondays and Tuesdays. While the boat launch and marina follow this schedule, you can still access the hiking and biking trails even when these facilities are closed.
