About the Location

A Piece of Raleigh's Past

Positioned in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Nash Square is a green time capsule dating back to 1792. This 4-acre patch of tranquility was part of the original city blueprint and has been giving locals a breather from urban life for over two centuries. Named after Abner Nash (North Carolina's second governor), this historic square has quietly witnessed the city transform around it while maintaining its own peaceful character.

Natural Charm

Walk into Nash Square and you'll find yourself under the protective canopy of majestic oaks and fragrant magnolias. The layout is surprisingly thoughtful - paved pathways form two concentric circles intersected by perpendicular walkways that connect to each corner of the square.

During sweltering Carolina summer days, the dense tree coverage creates a noticeably cooler microclimate. Benches scattered throughout invite you to sit and take in the seasonal perennials or simply watch the world go by at a slower pace.

Honoring Heroes

At the heart of Nash Square stands the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial, a solemn tribute established in 2006. This 50-foot-wide monument features four bronze firefighters atop a hexagonal cement base, surrounded by a low brick wall inscribed with the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.

The east side of the square hosts an eight-foot statue of Josephus Daniels, the influential local newspaper publisher and war veteran whose bronze likeness has stood watch since 1985.

For something a bit more whimsical, keep an eye out for the beloved squirrel sculpture clutching an acorn - it's become something of an unofficial mascot and a favorite photo spot for visitors of all ages.

A Downtown Sanctuary

Nash Square is a green refuge for downtown Raleigh. Office workers escape here during lunch breaks, bookworms find shady spots to read, and neighbors come to decompress from city living without having to leave the city.

The open grassy areas provide just enough space for kids to burn off energy, while the well-maintained grounds create a safe, clean environment that feels removed from the surrounding urban bustle.

Planning Your Visit

The square welcomes visitors 24/7, with metered parking available on the surrounding streets. You'll discover several restaurants within easy walking distance if you're looking to grab a bite to enjoy in the park.

Four-legged friends are welcome, and you'll often see locals walking their dogs along the park's winding paths.

Note that while Nash Square doesn't have designated picnic areas, tables, or public restrooms, many visitors simply bring a blanket or make use of the numerous benches scattered throughout this historic urban oasis.
