About the Location
Historical Significance
Dram Tree Park is named after an ancient cypress tree that once stood in the river and served as a landmark for sailors. This "dram tree" was part of a maritime tradition where ship captains would offer a dram (small drink) of rum to Neptune for safe passage as they passed the tree.
Location and Views
The park is situated on the east bank of the Cape Fear River. It offers visitors access to the river and scenic views of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
Boating Access
The park primarily serves as a boat launch site, featuring two concrete boat ramps that allow boaters and kayakers to enter the river. The park's location just upstream from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge makes it a convenient starting point for river excursions.
Recreational Use
While small in size, Dram Tree Park plays an important role in providing public river access in the Wilmington area. It serves both recreational boaters and fishing enthusiasts who use the park as a gateway to the Cape Fear River's aquatic resources.
