About the Location
A Maritime Legacy
Dram Tree Park gets its name from an old cypress tree that once stood proudly in the river, as a crucial landmark for sailors navigating these waters. The "dram tree" wasn't just any tree - it was central to a charming maritime tradition where ship captains would offer a dram (that's a small drink) of rum to Neptune as they passed by, hoping for safe passage ahead.
River Views That Will Make You Pause
Located on the east bank of the Cape Fear River, this modest park delivers some genuinely spectacular views of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. This is a wonderful vantage point in Wilmington, particularly at sunset when the colors spread across the sky over the river.
The scenery here is quite photo-worthy - whether you're capturing the bridge's sweeping lines, the distant USS North Carolina Battleship, or the light of sunrise and sunset reflecting on the water. Though small in size, there's something calming about sitting by the water here, taking a moment to pause and reflect.
Getting Out on the Water
At its heart, this park is a gateway to the river, featuring two concrete boat ramps that provide easy access for everything from motorboats to kayaks. The ramps are well-kept and convenient, however you should be mindful of the sometimes strong tidal currents, particularly near the bridge.
If you're planning a day on the water, the location just upstream from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge makes this an ideal launching point. There's plenty of parking for vehicles with trailers, but it can fill up quickly during summer weekends and special events.
Beyond a Boat Launch
While it's not the largest park around, Dram Tree Park provides convenient public access to the river in Wilmington. It's a favorite spot for both boaters and fishing enthusiasts looking to connect with the Cape Fear's aquatic environment.
Many locals come here simply to unwind and watch the world float by - from tugboats pushing barges to pleasure craft cruising the currents. And since it's within walking distance of downtown Wilmington, you can easily incorporate it into a day of exploring the city's many charms.
