About the Location
Natural Setting
Tucked away in the southwestern corner of Akron, Ohio, Chestnut Ridge Park sits at the first ridge of the Appalachian Mountain foothills. Stretching about 4,500 feet and reaching 1,116 feet in elevation, this historic green space (recognized as a great park in 2018) offers a peaceful escape from city life. There's something special about finding this secluded natural area in the Kenmore neighborhood - it feels like a quiet retreat from the surrounding city.
Hiking Trails
Lacing through the park are several walking trails that accommodate different fitness levels. The 0.4-mile Homesite Trail meanders through woods and fields, passing an old orchard and the remnants of a homestead - a little glimpse into the area's past.
If you're up for something longer, try the 1-mile Meadows Trail that skirts the edge of a high meadow and crosses a picturesque stream, or tackle the 1-mile Ridge Trail with its gradual 150-foot climb through the woods to the ridge's summit. Across the park, you'll find clear, well-maintained walkways for nature walks.
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking enthusiasts will appreciate the dedicated 10.5-mile trail system here. These paths include challenging terrain with steep climbs and descents through dense woods. The narrow 12- to 18-inch-wide trails include a creek bridge crossing and banked turns.
New to mountain biking? No problem - the trail system is thoughtfully divided into a 5-mile inner loop for beginners and intermediates, while more experienced riders can challenge themselves on the outer loop.
Disc Golf
The park's 9-hole disc golf course strikes a nice balance between accessibility and challenge. Beginners can practice their throws on the easier holes, while more seasoned players will find enough complexity to keep things interesting. The course winds naturally through the landscape, adding another fun outdoor activity option to your visit.
Fishing and Recreation
Bring your fishing gear to try your luck at the park's 2-acre fishing pond, home to bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Another unique feature is the stone stage and amphitheater with its many stairs - you'll often spot locals using them for workouts. The amphitheater's open-air design makes it stand out, and occasionally you might catch a community event happening here.
Playground and Picnic Areas
Kids will love the playground area with its variety of swings (including accessible options for children with special needs), climbing equipment, and slides. There's plenty of open space for running around and exploring.
You'll also find a shelter with picnic tables and grills that you can rent for gatherings like birthday parties. Need power for your event? Just ask when making your reservation. It's conveniently located near both the playground and parking lot - excellent for family outings.
Amenities
The practical stuff matters too: there's plenty of parking, wheelchair accessibility, and the park is pet-friendly with open spaces where your four-legged friends can stretch their legs. Several portable toilets are maintained throughout the warmer months.
Surrounded by distinctive stone walls that add character and history, Chestnut Ridge Park provides both recreational opportunities and a place where Akron residents and visitors can enjoy nature.
