About the Location
A Green Space with History
Located in Cincinnati's vibrant Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, Findlay Playground has weathered its fair share of ups and downs over the years. This little urban oasis on Vine Street has deep roots in the community, however it hasn't always been smooth sailing in terms of upkeep and safety concerns.
From Closure to Comeback
Back in 2018, safety issues prompted the City of Cincinnati to temporarily shut down Findlay Playground. The closure wasn't just about locking the gates - it was part of a broader strategy to address some unfortunate criminal activity that had been happening in the area.
After almost two years of sitting empty, the playground made its comeback in July 2020. The reopening wasn't just a city decision; it came after dedicated community members rolled up their sleeves for cleanup efforts and engaged in meaningful conversations with local officials about the park's future.
What You'll Find There
Findlay Playground keeps things pretty simple. You can find some picnic tables scattered in shaded spots where you can relax or enjoy a meal outdoors. Instead of permanent bathrooms, the park has portable toilets.
We should mention that cleanliness has been an ongoing challenge. The maintenance isn't always consistent, so you might notice some areas that could use a little more attention.
Looking to the Future
Things might be changing for the better, though. As of 2021, Findlay Playground was included in redevelopment proposals for the neighborhood. These plans aren't just about giving the playground a facelift - they're thinking bigger.
The vision includes a new recreational facility that would serve the community with amenities like an indoor pool and additional spaces for people to gather and connect.
More Than Just a Park
Despite its challenges, Findlay Playground serves an important role in Over-the-Rhine. It provides precious green space in a densely urban setting - somewhere for kids to play and neighbors to meet.
While it may not be the most elaborate park in Cincinnati, it provides a needed green space for the neighborhood.
