About the Location
Historic Origins
Located in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mt. Storm Park covers 59 acres along the western slope of a hill with excellent views of the Mill Creek Valley. We first discovered this serene location while exploring Cincinnati's historic parks, and its rich history immediately captivated us.
The park's story begins in the mid-19th century as the estate of Robert Bonner Bowler, a successful dry goods entrepreneur who once served as Mayor of Clifton (then a separate Cincinnati neighborhood). You can feel the echoes of this past as you wander the grounds today.
Architectural Highlights
A notable feature is the Temple of Love, a white Corinthian-style pergola designed by Adolph Strauch in 1845. This elegant structure originally covered a reservoir providing water to Bowler's estate and connects visitors to the park's history. It's become one of our favorite spots for quiet contemplation - and yes, it makes for incredible photos.
Another architectural treasure is the stone shelter or pavilion built in 1935 by Samuel Hannaford & Sons. Designed in what's known as "Depression Modern" style, this practical yet beautiful structure now hosts everything from family picnics to community celebrations.
Natural Beauty
As you explore Mt. Storm, you'll discover grassy rolling hills, winding walking trails, and meticulously maintained flower beds (thanks to the dedicated Clifton Garden Club).
The park's elevated position is excellent for sunset watching, with sweeping vistas of Cincinnati's western hills and the Millcreek Valley. The peaceful atmosphere here is a welcome respite from city life, and bird enthusiasts will appreciate the diverse avian residents.
Across the grounds, large oak trees provide welcome shade on hot summer days. Keep an eye out for the vibrant beauty berries growing in certain areas - they add splashes of color to the landscape during their season.
Recreational Amenities
If you're visiting with kids, head to the playground designed for children ages 5-12. The equipment is well-maintained and offers plenty of fun for younger visitors.
Soccer enthusiasts can enjoy a match on the park's soccer field, which accommodates players of all ages and skill levels.
Planning a picnic? Mt. Storm offers two picnic areas complete with tables, grills, and drinking fountains. There are about six tables available, so coming early is a good idea if you're organizing something for a larger group.
The paved paths across the park make for easy walking or jogging, and a drinking fountain ensures you can stay hydrated during your exercise.
Seasonal Activities
Mt. Storm changes with the seasons. When snow covers Cincinnati, the park's hills become popular sledding spots in the city.
During warmer months, the spacious grassy areas invite you to throw a frisbee, spread out a picnic blanket, or simply lie back and watch clouds drift across the sky.
Community Hub
Beyond its natural charm, Mt. Storm is a vibrant community gathering space. During the year, you might encounter Memorial Day picnics, classic car shows, or even Shakespeare in the Park performances that bring the community together.
The park welcomes four-legged friends too, though you'll need to keep them leashed to ensure everyone's enjoyment and safety. Whether you're a Cincinnati local or just passing through the gaslight district of Clifton, Mt. Storm Park provides a peaceful spot with historic surroundings and good views.
