About the Location
A Piece of Cincinnati's Past
Nestled at the meeting point of East Walnut Hills, O'Bryonville, and Evanston, Owl's Nest Park offers a 10.5-acre green escape from Cincinnati's urban rhythm. Since 1905, when the Perkins brothers (Charles E. and Edward C.) gifted this land in honor of their parents, it's been woven into the fabric of community life. If you wander through the grounds, you'll spot a granite plaque marking where the original Perkins house once stood - a quiet nod to the park's origins.
Architectural Retreat
The heart of the park is the Owl's Nest Pavilion, a brick beauty designed by Cincinnati architects Elzner & Anderson. Dedicated in 1933, this structure wasn't just built to be pretty - it originally served as both a pool and field house. From the upper level, you can take in views of the sweeping lawn facing Madison Road, while the lower level (once home to restrooms and concessions) overlooks what used to be a baseball field and swimming pool.
Natural Sanctuary
As you stroll through Owl's Nest, you'll appreciate the gentle rolling hills, the shade of mature trees, and paved pathways that meander around the grounds. These natural elements create a peaceful pocket of calm within the city.
The expansive grassy fields provide plenty of room to toss a frisbee, have a picnic, or simply lie back and cloud-watch. Just note that you'll need to find street parking, as vehicles aren't allowed inside the park itself.
Recreation for Everyone
If you're looking to burn some energy or relax with family, Owl's Nest offers several options. The playground area is a highlight for families - multiple play structures cater to different age groups, and the mature trees provide welcome shade even during Cincinnati's steamier months.
Scattered within the grounds are picnic areas complete with tables and grills - great for anything from a casual lunch to a birthday celebration. If you're feeling more active, the basketball courts and baseball field offer space to play.
Park Transformations
Like many long-standing public spaces, Owl's Nest has evolved over time. The swimming pool that once made summer days more bearable closed permanently in the 1990s.
In 2005, surrounding neighborhoods came together to initiate a $2 million public/private redevelopment plan, aiming to create a better venue for community gatherings and to strengthen connections between the adjacent areas.
Community Love
The park's story took a heartwarming turn in 2021 when local community groups rallied to save the aging Owl's Nest Pavilion from demolition. Thanks to their efforts, plans are now in motion for renovating the pavilion and improving the park as a whole to better serve the neighborhood's needs.
While locals continue to treasure this green space for gatherings and recreation, some have pointed out that certain features - like swings and bathroom facilities - could use some TLC and updates.
Planning Your Visit
You can enjoy Owl's Nest Park daily from 6AM to 10PM. Restroom facilities are available, although they're fairly basic. The park is also dog-friendly, and you'll likely encounter plenty of local pups and their humans enjoying the pathways during your visit.
