About Lincoln Park in Cleveland
Lincoln Park is an 8-acre public green space located in the heart of Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. Established in 1880, the park has served as a central gathering place for the community for over 140 years.
The park's history dates back to 1850 when Thirza Skinner Pelton and her husband Brewster Pelton purchased the land. Initially intended as the campus for the short-lived Cleveland University, the area became a public park after years of legal disputes. The City of Cleveland finally acquired the property in 1879 for $50,000, opening it to the public on July 4, 1880.
Lincoln Park features open green spaces, walking paths, and a central gazebo that serves as a focal point for many community events. The park hosts various cultural activities throughout the year, including the popular Arts in August series, which brings free performances of theater, dance, and music to the neighborhood.
In addition to its role as a cultural hub, Lincoln Park provides recreational facilities for residents. A public swimming pool, added in the early 1950s, offers relief from summer heat. The park also includes a playground, making it a favorite spot for families with children.
The park's location in the vibrant Tremont neighborhood places it near numerous historic churches, restaurants, and art galleries, contributing to the area's eclectic character. Lincoln Park continues to be a vital part of Tremont's community life, serving as both a quiet refuge and a lively venue for neighborhood events.
