About the Location
A Peek into the Past
Before becoming the Stuart Patterson Park we know today, this green space was called Walters Grove, a go-to spot for picnics. It later took on the name of Stuart Patterson, nephew of National Cash Register (NCR) founder John H. Patterson. Sadly, Stuart met a tragic end in a plane crash at nearby McCook Field.
You can still find a large commemorative stone that once held a plaque honoring Lt. Patterson, but the plaque itself seems to have disappeared over time. The park has some cool baseball history too - local lore has it that baseball legends Pete Rose and Johnny Bench stopped by in the early 70s to work with Little League teams.
What You'll Find There
This neighborhood location offers plenty of recreational options for everyone. The splash pad has a quirky medieval theme - with knights, horses, and water-breathing dragons making it a fun cool-down spot during Ohio's warm months.
Sports enthusiasts have their pick of facilities including basketball courts, tennis courts, and even a hockey rink. If team sports are more your thing, check out the baseball diamonds or kick a ball around on the soccer field complete with a goal. Little ones can burn off energy at the playground area with swings and equipment suitable for various ages.
The park's open grassy areas are good spots to walk your dog, toss a frisbee, or simply spread out a blanket and enjoy some fresh air.
Community Connections
The park is also home to the Francis Fitzsimmons Senior Citizens Center, a gathering place for older adults in the neighborhood. It's located between the Great Miami and Mad rivers within Dayton's urban landscape.
From time to time, you'll discover community events happening here, including the Taste of Old North Dayton which has offered free food to visitors. These gatherings help neighbors connect and create a stronger sense of community.
Good to Know
While the park has a lot going for it, it's worth noting that amenities like picnic tables and restrooms are somewhat limited. Maintenance can be a bit uneven within the park, with some areas looking better than others.
A nice bonus - the splash pad rarely gets overcrowded, even during summer months, making it an excellent choice if you have young children who want to cool off without the chaos of more popular water play areas.
Looking Ahead
The City of Dayton has included Stuart Patterson Park in its plans for local park improvements. Officials have been evaluating the existing features and considering potential upgrades to better meet community needs. So don't be surprised if you see some positive changes in the coming years as this historic park continues to evolve.
