About the Location
A Piece of Norman's Soul
Tucked just north of downtown Norman, Oklahoma, Andrews Park is a green space with local history dating back to 1890. The park was renamed in 1956 after J.A. "Abe" Andrews, the caretaker who maintained the grounds for three decades from 1926 to 1956.
Depression-Era Craftsmanship
The park features a native stone amphitheater, built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) between 1935 and 1937. This semi-circular venue, with its rustic stone benches, continues to host the community's most cherished gatherings, including the rhythmic beats of the annual Jazz in June festival and the colorful celebrations of the Norman Pride Festival.
Around the park, you'll see New Deal-era stonework - from the native stone entrance gates to two foot bridges and a stone-lined drainage ditch. Two native stone bathhouses round out these historical elements, preserved as quiet reminders of an earlier time.
Something for Everyone
The park has a playground that caters to different age groups. Little ones can safely play in the enclosed area with its secure latch gate, while more adventurous kids can tackle the taller slides and swings in the second area. There's also a tall rock feature for climbing.
During hot Oklahoma summers, the splash pad is a popular spot to cool off. The park includes a basketball court for pickup games and a concrete skate park with a bowl and half pipe for various skill levels.
The park's winding walking trails with their various steps make for an engaging workout route. It's not uncommon to see locals getting their steps in while enjoying the natural surroundings.
Natural Retreat
Mature trees provide shade throughout the park, good spots for picnics on a blanket or at one of the many picnic tables. Several shelters with roofs offer protection from sudden weather changes, and there's a special area connected to a building near the restrooms that's often reserved for organized gatherings.
Events and Location
The park hosts various events throughout the year, including Jazz in June, the Norman Pride Festival, seasonal celebrations, classic car shows, and a Monarch butterfly festival.
Located near downtown, next to the police station and public library, the park is easily accessible for Norman residents and visitors.
