About the Location
A Natural Retreat
Found in Norman, Oklahoma, John H. Saxon, Jr. Memorial Park spans an impressive 67 acres of green space that feels like a breath of fresh air from city life. This spacious park offers plenty of room to roam, whether you're looking for a peaceful solo walk or a place to stretch your legs with friends.
What makes this park special is how it balances open spaces with natural beauty. The landscape has been thoughtfully preserved, creating a pleasant mix of shady trees and sunny clearings that change with the seasons.
Hit the Trails
The park features a variety of paved and unpaved gravel trails winding throughout the grounds. North of the parking area, you can find gravel paths stretching approximately 1-2 miles depending on which route you take.
Prefer something more accessible? Head to the south side where about a half-mile of paved trails awaits. The terrain offers just enough gentle hills to keep things interesting without being too demanding. During Oklahoma's warmer months, you'll definitely appreciate the sections where trees provide cooling shade overhead.
Just know that after heavy rain, the gravel trails can get a bit soft, and some areas might wash out. Nothing too serious, but worth keeping in mind if you're planning a visit after a downpour.
Get Moving
The park includes a cross-country course featuring a 2-kilometer loop with smaller options for those who prefer a shorter distance. Whether you're training for your next race or just enjoying a casual jog, these trails offer an excellent setting.
The paved section includes outdoor workout equipment strategically placed along the way, making it easy to mix cardio and strength training during your visit. It functions as an outdoor gym surrounded by natural scenery.
Bring Your Four-Legged Friends
The park is dog-friendly, which is great for pet owners. Many locals frequently use it for walking their dogs on Norman's east side. The open spaces give pets plenty of room to explore (while leashed, of course).
Don't forget to bring bags to clean up after your pet. Keeping the park clean ensures everyone can enjoy its natural beauty.
What to Expect
One of the best things about Saxon Park is its peaceful atmosphere. Even on weekends, it rarely feels crowded, making it an excellent escape when you need some quiet time.
The park is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring handicap-accessible facilities and stroller-friendly trails that make it welcoming for visitors of all abilities. There's also ample parking available, so you won't have to circle around looking for a spot.
Just note that there aren't any restroom facilities or playground equipment here. This is more of a natural retreat than a family play area. Also, depending on the season, you might want to use insect repellent as ticks can be present in the more natural areas of the park.
