About the Location

A Breath of Fresh Air in Oklahoma City

Lake Hefner Park wraps around a 1940s reservoir that was originally built to quench Oklahoma City's growing thirst for water. Today, this 2,500-acre waterfront area has evolved into so much more - a place where city dwellers can enjoy nature without ever leaving town.

The park's well-maintained grounds offer a clean retreat from urban life, with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy nature your way.

Loop Around the Lake

The 9.5-mile trail circling the lake is the park's crown jewel. Whether you're a cyclist, runner, or someone who just enjoys a leisurely stroll, this path offers water views at every turn.

Many locals make completing the entire loop a regular part of their fitness routine, while others take it section by section, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The smooth, paved surface is suitable for everything from running shoes to roller skates.

Make a Splash

The lake itself is more than just scenery. It's popular for water activities, especially sailing. From April through October, the weekend sailboat races dot the water with colorful sails and competitive spirit.

If fishing is more your style, you're in luck. The lake is home to an impressive variety of fish, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, and crappie. Bring your gear and patience - many anglers leave with good stories and even better catches.

Get Your Game On

Prefer to keep your feet on solid ground? The park doesn't disappoint. Tee off at the golf course, perfect your serve on the tennis courts, or join a pickup game at the baseball or soccer fields.

Kids have plenty of options too, with several playgrounds scattered around the lake. The modern equipment keeps the little ones entertained while parents can relax nearby.

Wild Encounters

Nature lovers, keep your binoculars handy. The lake attracts diverse bird species all year long, making it a low-key hotspot for birdwatching. The local wildlife adds another dimension to your park experience.

Don't miss the magical moments at dawn and dusk. The sunrises and sunsets here cast colorful reflections on the water's surface - a nice sight if you're there early or in the evening.

Fuel Your Adventure

When hunger strikes, you've got options. Spread out a blanket at one of the many picnic areas, complete with tables and pavilions. Planning to stay longer? The grilling facilities let you cook up a feast while enjoying lakeside views.

For those days when you'd rather let someone else do the cooking, head to the East Wharf where restaurants serve up meals with a side of scenic vistas. Additional dining options line nearby Britton Road.

Portable restrooms are available at convenient spots around the lake. You'll also find plenty of open spaces fantastic for yoga, getting lost in a good book, or hanging your hammock between two trees.

Four-Legged Friends Welcome

Your furry companions can enjoy the park too - just keep them leashed in public areas. Many visitors bring their dogs to walk the trails and take in the fresh air together.

There is a dog park within Lake Hefner Park, but note that it requires a membership and isn't open to the general public.

A Lighthouse in Oklahoma?

Yes, you read that right. One of the park's most surprising features is a 36-foot tall working replica of the Brant Point Light, one of America's oldest lighthouses. This unexpected landmark has become a favorite photo spot and adds a touch of coastal charm to this landlocked park.

Plan Your Visit

While the park technically operates 24 hours, you might notice signs posting official hours from 5 am to 11 pm. Plan accordingly to make the most of your visit to this urban oasis.
