Park Overview

Positioned in Oklahoma City, South Lakes Park spans a generous 158 acres of green space that's been welcoming visitors since fall 2004. This regional park has earned a reputation for its clean grounds and welcoming atmosphere - it's the kind of place where families spread out picnic blankets while kids run freely through open fields. If you're looking for a breath of fresh air in OKC, this well-kept park is a good option.

Water Features

Water is a centerpiece here, with two distinct ponds adding tranquility to the landscape. The larger east pond covers nearly 10 acres with an average depth of 5.1 feet and comes equipped with a fishing dock and fish feeder. Its smaller sibling, the 2.5-acre west pond, maintains a similar depth and features fish attractors beneath the surface, with a convenient sidewalk circling its perimeter.

Both ponds participate in the "Close to Home" fishing program, making them perfect spots for casting a line. Local anglers regularly pull catfish and bass from these waters. Beyond the fish, you'll spot turtles sunning themselves on logs and waterfowl gliding across the surface - nature's own little drama playing out while you relax lakeside.

Trails and Recreation

A 1.6-mile walking trail meanders through the park, complete with helpful mile markers and strategically placed benches for catching your breath. The wide, paved path includes passing lanes, accommodating everyone from morning joggers to families on afternoon bike rides and everyone in between.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the impressive sports complex featuring 15 meticulously maintained soccer fields. These fields have hosted the Southern Regional Championships, drawing teams from ten states. Despite heavy seasonal use, the grounds remain in good condition.

If traditional sports aren't your thing, check out the skate park for some boarding action or head to the covered basketball courts for a pickup game protected from the elements.

Family Amenities

South Lakes works well as a family destination. You'll discover plenty of picnic areas with covered tables scattered throughout, great for impromptu lunches. For more organized gatherings, the rentable picnic shelter comfortably hosts medium-sized groups - ideal for birthday celebrations or family reunions.

The playground area is quite large, featuring three distinct playsets tailored to different age groups. One appears to be wheelchair accessible, another takes the shape of a ship for imaginative adventures, and the third boasts an impressive tall tower with slides that even the little ones can climb up to with ease. Rounding out the play space are swings, a sandbox, and stationary metal jeeps that transform children into explorers on safari.

Event Center

For those special occasions requiring indoor space, the park's event center offers a practical solution. This modest venue comfortably fits 40-60 people and includes convenient amenities like a kitchen area with refrigerator and counter space, plus clean bathrooms. While parking nearby can fill up during peak times, the rental fees and deposit are quite reasonable given what you get in return.

Facilities and Accessibility

South Lakes Park provides a valuable recreational escape for Oklahoma City residents and visitors alike. The gates open daily from 5 AM to 11 PM, giving early birds and night owls alike plenty of time to enjoy the space.

Note that restroom facilities primarily consist of portable toilets, with several positioned near the playground area. Four-legged family members are welcome to join the fun, but remember they must stay leashed at all times.
