LaFortune Park
About LaFortune Park
A Piece of Tulsa History
Opened back in 1960, LaFortune Park holds a special place in Oklahoma's history as the state's first county park. This 270-acre green haven came to life thanks to oilman J.A. LaFortune, who donated $250,000 to create a space for the city that had treated him so well.
For Golf Lovers
The park's crown jewel might just be its 18-hole championship golf course. For something a bit more casual, the park offers Oklahoma's only lighted 18-hole par-3 course. Need to work on your swing? The lighted driving range with over eighty stations stays open until 10 p.m. during busy seasons. The facilities are well-maintained and staffed by knowledgeable pros, with reasonable pricing.
Getting Active
Beyond golf, LaFortune Park offers numerous sports facilities. You'll come across baseball fields, excellent tennis courts, and even a nationally recognized tennis center with indoor courts. For casual exercise, the 3.2-mile asphalt trail winds through the park with a mix of sun and shade areas and relatively gentle slopes. Basketball fans can shoot some hoops at the park's court, and recently, pickleball has been drawing quite a crowd.
Natural Beauty
With over 700 trees and 11 ponds scattered throughout, the park offers plenty of peaceful spots to unwind. Fishing is permitted in two of the ponds (just make sure to follow Oklahoma fishing regulations). As you explore, you'll likely spot ducks and geese going about their day. Art lovers will appreciate the unique installations like the Tulsa Herd buffalo statues, the hunting dog sculptures, and a rather majestic moose statue.
Kid-Friendly Zones
Families with children will find several options here. The park features at least three separate playgrounds designed with different age groups in mind. From toddler-appropriate equipment to more challenging structures for older kids, there's something for everyone. The play areas feature safety-focused soft ground surfaces made from recycled tires. Most play areas are well-shaded too, which is a blessing during those hot Oklahoma summers.
Gathering Spaces
The park has space for family gatherings and celebrations. LaFortune Park offers several picnic areas and picnic pavilions across the grounds. The three large covered pavilions come equipped with electrical outlets and can be reserved in advance. You'll also find smaller picnic tables and grills scattered around if you're just planning an impromptu lunch outdoors.
The park has become something of a community hub, housing both the Buddy LaFortune Community Center and the Herman and Kate Kaiser Library. With restrooms and ample parking, the park welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually.
