About the Location
History and Origin
Established in 1960, LaFortune Park holds the distinction of being the first county park in Oklahoma. The sprawling 270-acre public park was created through a generous donation of $250,000 by oilman J.A. LaFortune, who wanted to give back to the city that had been good to him.
Golf Facilities
At the heart of the park lies an 18-hole championship golf course, complemented by the only lighted 18-hole par-3 course in Oklahoma. Golf enthusiasts can also take advantage of a lighted driving range with over eighty stations, open until 10 p.m. during peak seasons. The golf facilities are well-maintained with friendly, professional staff and reasonably priced for a public course.
Sports and Recreation
LaFortune Park boasts extensive sports facilities, including baseball fields, tennis courts, and a nationally recognized tennis center with indoor courts. For those seeking outdoor exercise, the park offers a 3.2-mile asphalt trail that winds through its grounds, popular among walkers and joggers. The paved trail features a mix of sun and shade with gentle inclines, making it suitable for all fitness levels. The park also includes a basketball court and has become a popular spot for pickleball players.
Natural Features
The park's natural landscape includes over 700 trees and 11 ponds, providing a serene environment for visitors. Two of the ponds permit fishing, subject to Oklahoma fishing laws. Throughout the park, visitors can enjoy viewing wildlife including ducks and geese. The park also features unique art installations, including the Tulsa Herd buffalo statues, hunting dog sculptures, and a moose statue.
Playgrounds and Family Areas
Families can enjoy multiple playgrounds designed for different age groups. There are at least three separate playground areas with equipment for both older children and toddlers, featuring slides, swings, and climbing structures. The play areas have soft, cushioned ground surfaces made from recycled tires for safety. The playgrounds are generally well-shaded, making them comfortable even on hot days.
Picnic and Community Amenities
LaFortune Park offers numerous picnic areas and picnic pavilions throughout the grounds. There are three large covered pavilions available for rental, perfect for parties and gatherings, equipped with electrical outlets. Smaller picnic tables and grills are scattered throughout the park. The park serves as a community hub, hosting a variety of amenities such as the Buddy LaFortune Community Center and the Herman and Kate Kaiser Library. With clean, accessible restrooms and ample parking, the park attracts over 100,000 visitors annually, making it a central feature of Tulsa's public spaces.
