About the Location
Natural Features
Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area is a 650-acre natural area located along the west bank of the Arkansas River in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rising 300 feet above the river, the heavily wooded "mountain" offers visitors a chance to experience nature within the city limits.
The forest is dominated by post oak, blackjack oak, and hickory trees, with some specimens dating back to the early 1800s. Wildlife such as deer, foxes, and various bird species can be spotted throughout the area. Visitors may also encounter smaller wildlife including tarantulas, snakes, and during spring, monarch butterflies. In spring, redbud trees add splashes of color to the landscape.
Two small ponds can be found within the park, stocked with fish and perfect for fishing enthusiasts. The larger pond near the parking lot is filled with sunfish, making it an ideal spot for children to enjoy fishing. The park offers scenic views of downtown Tulsa and the Arkansas River from its highest points, with several different vantage points providing breathtaking panoramas.
Trails and Recreation
The park features over 25 miles of winding trails that are popular for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. The trails range from easy to difficult, with some rocky and steep sections providing a challenge for more experienced users. Trail signage has been improved in recent years, though some visitors may still find navigation challenging.
A one-mile gravel loop trail provides an accessible option for beginners or those looking for a shorter walk. For the more adventurous, the park features Oklahoma's largest natural staircase, a unique stone formation that offers both a physical challenge and a point of interest.
The park has dedicated trails for different activities, with separate paths for hikers and mountain bikers to ensure safety for all visitors. The mountain biking trails include features such as jumps, drops, and flowing downhill sections that appeal to riders of all skill levels.
While feeling secluded, Turkey Mountain Park is conveniently located just minutes from the heart of the city, making it a popular urban escape for outdoor enthusiasts.
Facilities and Amenities
The park offers several amenities for visitors' convenience. Restroom facilities are available at the lower parking lot, with portable toilets located at the upper parking area. A drinking fountain that includes a pet water station is available for both visitors and their four-legged companions.
Turkey Mountain features picnic areas throughout the park, including a large open field perfect for gatherings and a pavilion that provides shade. While there are no formal picnic tables, visitors often bring blankets to enjoy meals amidst nature.
The park is dog-friendly, requiring pets to be kept on leashes at all times. This policy helps protect both the wildlife and ensures a pleasant experience for all visitors.
Improvements and Future Plans
In recent years, the park has undergone significant improvements and expansions. New professionally-designed mountain biking trails have been added, enhancing the offerings for cyclists. The park management has also focused on maintaining trail quality, including policies to prevent use during muddy conditions to preserve trail integrity.
Trail markers and signage have been upgraded to help visitors navigate the extensive network of paths. Turkey sculptures can be found in the parking lot area, adding a whimsical touch to the park entrance.
Plans are in place for further amenity upgrades, including a new visitor center and additional parking areas to accommodate the park's growing popularity.
