About the Location

River Adventures & Hangouts

First Street Rapids Park is a pleasant natural area that straddles both sides of the Deschutes River. It's popular for canoeing and kayaking, with many enthusiasts visiting regularly. On Thursday and Sunday mornings, you might catch local slalom kayak groups practicing their moves through the currents.

As the name suggests, there are actual rapids running through this stretch of river, which adds a bit of excitement to your visit. Don't worry though - they're mellow enough that tubers can have a blast floating through (just be ready to get a little wet in the process!).

Trails Worth Traveling

The trails along the Deschutes River connect to the broader Deschutes River Trail network, offering nice views of the flowing water and surrounding landscape. The paths are paved and mostly flat - perfect whether you're out for a casual stroll, morning jog, or bike ride.

A pedestrian bridge links the east and west banks, giving you extra vantage points to take in the scenery. Cross over and you can continue your journey north to Sawyer Park or head south to Pioneer Park without missing a beat of the riverside experience.

Wildlife Watching

If you're a nature buff, head to the northern and southern ends of the park where wildlife tends to congregate. Keep your eyes peeled for river otters and beavers going about their day in the water. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate spotting trumpeter swans, bald eagles, ospreys, and various migratory birds that call this area home year-round.

Natural Vibes & Recreation

First Street Rapids offers a natural retreat within urban Bend. The park remains mostly undeveloped, preserving a more natural feel with minimal facilities.

You'll discover plenty of small beaches and river alcoves where you can set up a chair right in the water, ideal for cooling off when the summer heat hits. Locals love coming here to dangle their feet in the river or simply relax by the water's edge.

Dog owners particularly appreciate this park - there's ample space for four-legged friends to play and even splash around in the river, but do note the area isn't fenced.

Simple Amenities

The park keeps it minimal on purpose, but you'll still find the essentials. A handful of picnic tables and benches are scattered near the bridge and along the path if you want to enjoy lunch with a river view.

For bathroom needs, there's a porta-potty near the bridge, with more proper facilities just a short walk away at Pioneer Park.

Just a heads-up: parking is limited with just a small lot and some street spaces available. If you're coming during busy times (especially summer weekends), you might want to arrive early to snag a spot.

Staying Safe

While the park offers beautiful access to the river, visitors should exercise caution around the water, especially near swift currents or rapids. There aren't many safety barriers here, so it's up to you to stay aware of your surroundings when enjoying the riverbank.

If you're planning to swim, strong swimming skills are recommended - the current stays pretty quick even outside the rapids section. And as with any water activity, it's always safer to bring a buddy along rather than swimming solo.
