About the Location
Park Overview
Spanning 100 acres along the Willamette River just north of downtown Eugene, Skinner Butte Park is one of the city's oldest and most historically significant parks. The park is named after Eugene Skinner, the founder of Eugene, who established his cabin on the butte in 1846.

The Butte
The centerpiece of the park is Skinner Butte itself, a 682-foot elevation that offers panoramic views of Eugene and the surrounding Willamette Valley. Visitors can drive or hike to the summit, where they'll find viewpoints and open grassy areas.
The butte is also home to a large "O" emblem representing the University of Oregon, visible from much of the city.

Recreation Areas
At the base of the butte, the park features diverse recreational facilities. The RiverPlay Discovery Village Playground, opened in 2006, is a popular attraction for families.
This unique playground was designed to reflect Eugene's history and natural environment, featuring elements like a replica of Eugene Skinner's ferry and a climbing structure inspired by the park's basalt columns.

Climbing Opportunities
The park's western face includes "The Columns," a former basalt quarry that has become a well-known rock climbing area. With routes of varying difficulty on 45-foot high columns, it attracts both novice and experienced climbers.

Natural Features
Skinner Butte Park encompasses significant natural areas. Trails wind through forested slopes and open meadows, offering opportunities for hiking, nature observation, and birdwatching.
The park's location along the Willamette River provides access to the water for fishing and scenic views.

Historical Sites
Historical and cultural elements are scattered throughout the park. These include a replica of Skinner's cabin, the Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House (a Victorian mansion open for tours), and various memorials and public art installations.
