About the Location
History and Origins
Positioned in Eugene, Oregon, Tugman Park stretches across 20.6 acres of prime neighborhood real estate. Located on the west side of Hilyard Street from 36th to 38th Avenue, it stands as one of Eugene's most spacious neighborhood parks.
The park's story began in 1939 when the city purchased its first parcel of land. While it initially went by the name South Amazon Park, it later received its current moniker in honor of William M. Tugman, the influential editor of the Register Guard newspaper from 1927 to 1954.
Beyond his journalistic contributions, Tugman was a passionate advocate for Oregon's state parks, eventually becoming the first chairman of the State Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee in 1957.
Features and Amenities
Tugman Park offers a delightful blend of open spaces, wooded areas, and recreational facilities. The playground got a major facelift in 2019, thanks to funding from the 2018 Parks and Recreation Bond and Levy.
This renovation brought in fresh play structures, climbing features, and a sand play area that's been a hit with families ever since.
The playground has dedicated zones for both younger and older children. There are three different types of swings, including accessible options for children with disabilities, and a modern merry-go-round that updates the classic playground feature.
The playground includes a zipline for more adventurous children. There's also a spacious sandbox area where younger children can play.
Recreational Facilities
Need to shoot some hoops? The park's basketball court attracts players of all skill levels. There's also a sprawling, well-kept grassy field ideal for impromptu sports matches, frisbee games, or giving your four-legged friend some exercise.
Planning a gathering? Multiple covered gazebos equipped with picnic tables provide welcome shade and shelter. These spots operate on a first-come, first-served basis and work wonderfully for birthday celebrations or community get-togethers.
Environmental History
The southern section of the park has a rather unexpected past - it was once a municipal burning dump from approximately 1925 to 1951. In the mid-1990s, this area underwent environmental remediation overseen by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, transforming what was once a disposal site into part of the beautiful park visitors enjoy today.
Natural Areas
In 2002, the park expanded with the addition of a high-quality natural space in its northwest corner, previously known as "Fawn Lily Rise." This extension enhances the park's ecological diversity and creates more opportunities to observe local flora and fauna.
A small creek winds through the park, accompanied by kid-friendly trails that make exploration accessible and fun. These semi-wild pockets provide a contrast to the developed areas, offering a touch of nature within the city.
The park's paved paths feature cushioning in some sections, creating an ideal setting for children mastering their cycling skills. A bike path traverses the park, linking it to Eugene's broader community trail network.
Facilities and Services
When nature calls, you'll come across restrooms that are generally well-maintained, however keep in mind they typically close during winter months starting November 1st. Drinking water is also available seasonally.
No need to worry about parking - there's plenty of street parking around the park's perimeter, making it easily accessible regardless of which part of Eugene you're coming from.
Whether you want to play, picnic, or simply relax in nature, Tugman Park offers a mix of recreational facilities and green spaces. Its family-friendly environment makes it popular with Eugene residents looking for both recreation and peaceful natural surroundings.
