About the Location
A Touch of Political History
Tucked away in Eugene, Oregon sits the Wayne Morse Family Farm, a 27-acre green haven with a story to tell. This wasn't always a city park - it was once home to Wayne Morse, the fiercely independent U.S. Senator who served from 1944 to 1968. Not one to mince words, Morse earned himself the colorful nickname "The Tiger in the Senate" for his unwavering principles and outspoken nature.
The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving a tangible connection to Oregon's political legacy.
The House That History Built
The centerpiece of the park is a two-story house built in 1936. Designed in the Colonial Revival style by University of Oregon architecture professor Wallace S. Hayden, the wood-framed structure features a distinctive gable roof and classic wood siding.
If you wander around, you'll also spot a detached garage and stable that contribute to the property's historic character. Inside the house, pieces of history await - including a bust of the Senator and his well-worn Senate Office chair that's surely witnessed its share of political discussions.
Natural Retreats and Open Spaces
Beyond its historical significance, the farm offers a lovely mix of wooded areas, open meadows, and grassy lawns to explore. Nature trails meander throughout the property, giving you a chance to connect with the varied landscape. While some sections of the paved trails get a bit steep, most people find them manageable.
Looking to host a gathering? From May through October, you can rent the covered picnic shelter complete with tables and a fireplace - meant for family reunions, birthdays, or just a fancy picnic with friends.
Puppy Paradise
Perhaps the most popular feature is the off-leash dog exercise area that's fully fenced and divided into several sections. Your dog will have space to run, fetch, and interact with other dogs.
The dog park thoughtfully includes running water for thirsty pups or those who enjoy splashing around, making hot summer days more bearable. Just a heads up - after rain showers, parts of the area can turn into mud pits, so maybe leave your white sneakers at home during the wet season.
Know Before You Go
The City of Eugene keeps the park open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM. If you're in the mood for a peaceful nature walk, a picnic on the grass, or a history lesson, there's something here for you.
While you can freely roam the grounds, the interior of the historic house isn't regularly open to the public, but occasional tours do pop up. One thing to note: there are no restroom facilities at the park, so plan your visit accordingly.
If you're hitting the trails, watch out for poison oak in some areas, and wear appropriate footwear for the terrain. A little preparation goes a long way toward making your visit to this historic haven enjoyable.
